Interracial Marriage…How do you feel about it in 2016?

Inter_racial_RelationshipsIn 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving, a black woman and a white man were arrested in their home — in their bedroom — in Caroline County, Virginia. Both had been sentenced to a year in prison because their marriage violated the state’s anti-miscegenation statute and the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which prohibited marriage between people classified aswhiteand people classified ascolored“.

The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision determined that this prohibition was unconstitutional, reversing Pace v. Alabama (1883) and ending all race-based legal restrictions on marriage in the United States.

The decision was followed by an increase in interracial marriages in the U.S., and is remembered annually on Loving Day, June 12. It is the subject of an upcoming movie to hit theatres in November 2016.

Already meeting Oscar buzz at the Cannes film festival,  It’s absurdly early for Oscar to be sure, but it’s also not hard to see why. The movie’s writer-director Jeff Nichols dramatizes one of America’s most seminal civil rights Supreme Court cases, Loving v. Virginia, but he does so by focusing on the quiet, heartbreaking love story at its center: the marriage of Mildred and Richard Loving.

Does love indeed conquer all? And how do you feel about interracial marriages and relationships?

Would you still Date -or- Marry Him, if he made “Less Money than you?” on “Conversations Of A Sistah

Indepenent-woman-shaidysworldIn today’s society  women are high achievers, successful and financially secure. They’re buying homes and investing in property and basically holding their own. Women are no longer waiting on the dream of meeting a prince and living in his home with 2.5 children and the white picket fence. Today’s women are independently stable and self-sufficient.

The successful woman have choices because they no longer need to worry about some man supporting or taking care of them? However, if you’re a woman who is in the top 10% of earners and you INSIST that your man out earn you, then you’ve now eliminated 90% of the dating population. And that’s before you’ve considered kindness, compatibility, attraction, values, height, weight, age, humor, children, etc. Doesn’t that sound like a self-defeating edict? Sure does.

Tune-in tonight at 6:30 p.m. EST on Conversations Of A Sistah” via Blog Talk Radio as I weigh in on the subject “Should Women date -or- Marry a man who makes LESS money than she does?”

Fact vs. Fantasy In Love….Which is the Reality?

Love-your-choice2-1024x556We all want to experience real love, but how would you define it? How do you know when what you are experiencing is real love?

Defining love is like defining a particular color to a person who has never been able to see color – you have to feel it to know what it is. The reason it is so hard to define real love is because you cannot experience it with your mind, and definitions are of the mind. Real love is of the heart, and is the result of your intention to be genuine, because love is NOT A FEELING; it’s a decision. And you make that decision based upon experience.

But what about true/real love in relationships? Love is an action that if you don’t use it you lose it. Love is like any communication, if you never send it out, you won’t get a return. Love is something you give to others not something you feel because something happens to you. Love is something that grows from your actions and decisions and if you don’t have it, or is not experiencing it; then there is something you don’t know about love!!

In fantasy verses the facts about love, we may paint a pretty picture in our minds about this fantasy, which  isn’t necessarily built on the admirable qualities we desire in a partner. Instead, it may be based on gaps we hope to one day fill, mistakes we aim to correct, and familiarities we’ve grown accustomed to. However, one’s traits, faults and weaknesses should become a reality in growing our relationships.

Love is probably the single most universally desired human quality that exist on this planet. Love is not something you can buy or barter, it is not taught in school, it doesn’t matter how rich you are, your IQ, race, creed, religion, social economic status or who you know. Love IS exactly as it does…So as some of you approach this Valentine’s Day, practice making a decision to love and then follow that decision up with actions that communicate love.

But remember…. love is not a feeling; love is a decision!

What will you decide?

Patti LaBelle, 71, Dating Her Drummer, 41

couple-550x360R&B legend Patti LaBelle is living a life straight out of American Gigolo, the 1980 film about an emotionally unavailable high priced male escort.

The 71-year-young songstress, who revived her career selling sweet potato pies for Wal-Mart, is dating her drummer, 41-year-old Eric Seats.

The couple met after he was hired to be her drummer last year.

“She tried to keep it quiet, but everyone around her has figured it out by now. She’s completely smitten with him,” a source told London’s Daily Mail tabloid.

LaBelle’s 42-year-old son, Zuri Edwards, is reportedly unhappy that his mother is dating a man younger than he is.

Seats is known around the music industry for targeting rich older women. He reportedly loves them then leaves them. But Patti’s friends aren’t concerned that Seats might be an American gigolo.

“She hasn’t been this happy in years,” a source confided to the Daily Mail. “Patti was so happy he moved to Philly with her. She loves having him with her all the time. She even has a big portrait of the two of them up on her wall in her bedroom,” said the source.

Seats has toured with Stevie Wonder, Mary J Blige and Missy Elliott, in addition to producing songs for Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah, 702 and Tank.
