Old-Time Slave Code…Is it still in Effect? Tonight on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

ab229_burns2-jpg-resize-710x399The oldest U.S. slave laws are found in the State of Virginia. There is a publication entitled The Statutes at Large; Being a Collection of all the Laws of Virginia, volume 2 (1823) by William W. Henning. This publication contains the Virginia Slave Codes. Among these codes is a document, dated October of 1669, which is entitled “An act about the casual killing of slaves”.

Under the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, when a law enforcement officer is pursuing a suspect, the officer may apply deadly force to prevent escape if he or she has “probable cause” to believe that the suspect poses a threat. Needless to say, it is very difficult to prove that a law enforcement officer does not have “probable cause”.

Those terms, which delude to slavery, were defined as objects of commercial trade in the Law of Nations. This definition carried over into the U.S. slave laws and later on, into the various statues that are in effect today. A slave is one who is void of a nationality, as nationality determines one’s political status and a slave has no political rights. The nationality of Moors was taken away from them in 1774 and the words “negro”, “black” and “colored” were given to Asiatics, of America, who were of Moorish descent.

attachIs Justifiable Homicide the Modern Day “Casual Killing Of Slaves”?

When you think about Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Philandro Decastro, Terrance Crutcher, Alton Sterling, Keith Lamont, Sandra Bland, Yvette Smith and so many other black men and women who were unjustifiably murdered under the guise of “justifiable homicide” by police, the numbers are alarming.

Unfortunately, not a year goes by without a news report of some young man or woman dying at the hands of police (or someone who acts as if they are the police). Usually, these cases are polarized by the factor of race.

Is there “Light skin vs. dark Skin” privilege in Society? Tonight on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

Light_Skin_PriviledgeHard to believe we did a show just four (4) years ago, in 2012 regarding “Light Skin vs. Dark Skin” and this very topic is still alive and very well today.

Since Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams spoke out of turn (for some), at the BET Awards last month, social media and online blogs felt he wasn’t black enough to do so.

Williams, who is half white, called out white people for appropriating black music for fame and profit.

He also showed support for social media militants, Black Lives Matter, saying, “We know that police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm and not kill white people every day.”

Williams, whose mother is white and father black, let the world know just how comfortable he is NOT with his fame, in today’s hateful society of injustice and inequality.

Williams’ speech set-off such a firestorm online and in the media, that a petition was circulated calling the series creator Shonda Rhimes to fire Williams from ‘Anatomy’.

Many saying if Isaiah Washington was fired for being outspoken Williams should be fired just as well. Setting off the theory that “light skinned” blacks receive preferential treatment over “dark skinned blacks”.

Polygamy in 2016….Ladies Would you share your husband?

polygamy_1490320cPolygamy and Bigamy is illegal in the U.S., yet some people are practicing this way of living as if it is the new norm. Essentially they are the same in the aspect of having more than one wife/spouse.

Over the last few years there have been a number of television shows regarding the polygamist lifestyle. This has led some to wonder whether polygamy may be legal anywhere in the U.S. It also raises questions about why bigamy is outlawed and whether this is a trend that may be changing.

Is polygamy the next fight in marriage equality?

Currently, every state has a law outlawing polygamy. Additionally, the federal government has several laws that also criminalize the act of being married to more than one person. Enforcement of these laws is relatively difficult given the often secretive nature of many polygamists and the fact that most will have only one marriage on paper.

The question of polygamy is an interesting one in that most people today view polygamy as immoral while the Bible nowhere explicitly condemns it. Several prominent men in the Old Testament were polygamists. Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others all had multiple wives.

Your Soulmate IS NOT your Significant Other, Tonight on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

SoulMates-largeI think we all have different definitions of a soul mate. We tend to believe that a soul mate is a lover, spouse or lifetime partner;  someone with whom we have or will develop a romantic relationship. This may be the case in some instances but not necessarily definitive.

A soul mate is a person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity. Affinity in terms of sociology, which refers to “kinship of spirit”, interest and other interpersonal commonalities.

In current usage, “soulmate” usually refers to a romantic partner, with the implication of an exclusive lifelong bond. This is to say, the word is used with more rarity than other terms associated with ‘romantic partner’. It is a very versatile term, being defined differently by different individuals, as it is related to the concept of love.

Soulmate commonly holds the connotation of being the strongest bond with another person that one can achieve. Soulmate is not used as often as other terms representing the same idea, and this is likely to lead to its perceived rarity in meaning. The definition ranges widely and cannot be pinpointed. It is commonly accepted that one will feel ‘complete’ once they have found their soulmate, as it is partially in the perceived definition that two souls are meant to unite.
