“Children’s Book Author “Delores Connors” on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

Delores_ConnorsFor a child to go from a mainstream classroom to a special education class can be quite devastating. It is an emotional journey that can have a strong impact on the student’s learning.

Delores Connors, (pictured above), author of the children’s book “I Don’t Want to Go” takes a look at the dilemma that most children face when transitioning into special education. This realization represents a good start toward promoting understanding and respect for children faced with this prospect.

Join me tonight at 6:30 p.m. on “Conversations Of A Sistah” via blog talk radio, as I kick off Black History month by welcoming Ms. Connors as my special guest to discuss her new title and her role in helping parents, teachers and school administrators cope with this process.

The “5” Things They Won’t Tell You About the Flint, Michigan Water Tragedy…

flintThe water crises in Flint, Michigan is beyond a hot mess, it’s a genocide in record numbers and a travesty far beyond the root of the real issue.

When the governor’s office discovered just how toxic the water was, they decided to keep quiet about it and covered up the extent of the damage being done to Flint’s residents, most notably the lead affecting the children, causing irreversible and permanent brain damage. Citizen activists uncovered these actions, and the governor now faces growing cries to resign or be arrested.

Here are ‘5’ things that you probably don’t know about this crisis in Flint, simply because the media, having come to the story so late, will not process it all as it happens.

1. While the Children in Flint Were Given Poisoned Water to Drink, General Motors Was Given a Special Hookup to the Clean Water.

The governor was appalled to hear that GM property was being damaged, so he jumped through a number of hoops and quietly spent $440,000 to hook GM back up to the Lake Huron water, while keeping the rest of Flint on the Flint River water.

2. For Just $100 a Day, This Crisis Could’ve Been Prevented.

Federal law requires that water systems which are sent through lead pipes must contain an additive that seals the lead into the pipe and prevents it from leaching into the water. Someone at the beginning suggested to the governor that they add this anti-corrosive element to the water coming out of the Flint River.

“How much would that cost?” came the question. “$100 a day for three months,” was the answer.

Now as a result of such mishap, the state may now end up having to pay $1.5 billion to fix the mess.

3. There’s More Than the Lead in Flint’s Water.

In addition to exposing every child in the city of Flint to lead poisoning on a daily basis, there appears to be a number of other diseases we may be hearing about in the months ahead. The number of cases in Flint of Legionnaires Disease has increased tenfold since the switch to the river water.

Eighty-seven people have come down with it, and at least 10 have died. In the five years before the river water, not a single person in Flint had died of Legionnaires Disease. Doctors are now discovering that another half-dozen toxins are being found in the blood of Flint’s citizens, causing concern that there are other health catastrophes which may soon come to light.

4. People’s Homes in Flint Are Now Worth Nothing Because They Cant Be Sold.

Would you buy a house in Flint right now? Who would? So every homeowner in Flint is stuck with a house that’s now worth nothing. That’s a total home value of $2.4 billion down the economic drain. People in Flint, one of the poorest cities in the U.S., don’t have much to their name, and for many their only asset is their home.

So, in addition to being poisoned, they have now a net worth of zero.

5. While They Were Being Poisoned, They Were Also Being Bombed.

Here’s a story which has received little or no coverage outside of Flint. During these two years of water contamination, residents in Flint have had to contend with a decision made by the Pentagon to use Flint for target practice. Literally. Actual unannounced military exercises- – complete with live ammo and explosives — were conducted last year inside the city of Flint. The army decided to practice urban warfare on Flint, making use of the thousands of abandoned homes which they could drop bombs on.

Streets with dilapidated homes had rocket-propelled grenades fired upon them. For weeks, an undisclosed number of army troops pretended Flint was Baghdad or Damascus and basically had at it. It sounded as if the city was under attack from an invading army or from terrorists. People were shocked this could be going on in their neighborhoods.

In the meantime, the children of Flint, Michigan are suffering skin rashes and other unknown disease, yet the media will not divulge the whole truth behind what is really going on there. The real question is, where is the resolve in this crises?

Fact vs. Fantasy In Love….Which is the Reality?

Love-your-choice2-1024x556We all want to experience real love, but how would you define it? How do you know when what you are experiencing is real love?

Defining love is like defining a particular color to a person who has never been able to see color – you have to feel it to know what it is. The reason it is so hard to define real love is because you cannot experience it with your mind, and definitions are of the mind. Real love is of the heart, and is the result of your intention to be genuine, because love is NOT A FEELING; it’s a decision. And you make that decision based upon experience.

But what about true/real love in relationships? Love is an action that if you don’t use it you lose it. Love is like any communication, if you never send it out, you won’t get a return. Love is something you give to others not something you feel because something happens to you. Love is something that grows from your actions and decisions and if you don’t have it, or is not experiencing it; then there is something you don’t know about love!!

In fantasy verses the facts about love, we may paint a pretty picture in our minds about this fantasy, which  isn’t necessarily built on the admirable qualities we desire in a partner. Instead, it may be based on gaps we hope to one day fill, mistakes we aim to correct, and familiarities we’ve grown accustomed to. However, one’s traits, faults and weaknesses should become a reality in growing our relationships.

Love is probably the single most universally desired human quality that exist on this planet. Love is not something you can buy or barter, it is not taught in school, it doesn’t matter how rich you are, your IQ, race, creed, religion, social economic status or who you know. Love IS exactly as it does…So as some of you approach this Valentine’s Day, practice making a decision to love and then follow that decision up with actions that communicate love.

But remember…. love is not a feeling; love is a decision!

What will you decide?

“Racism In America Today ~ As It Relates To Dr. M. L. King’s Vision on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

MLKConversations Of A Sistah is back! And our topic of discussion is Racism in America!

Racism has fostered inequality and discrimination for centuries, as well as influencing how we relate to other human beings as a whole. Racial hatred and bigotry is also on the rise in this country at an all-time high. It’s like history is repeating itself with the massive killings of unarmed African-America men, women and children.

Since the rise in these killings around the country, the unrest has unveiled the “Black Lives Matter” organization. An International Activist Movement, originating in the African American Community that campaigns against violence geared toward people of color. This organization has in many ways adopted some of the same strategies as the Civil Rights Movement. The purpose of the movement was to make sure that all citizens, all races, all religious groups and all nationalities are treated equally under the law.

Join me tonight at 6:30 p.m. on “Conversations Of A Sistah” on Blog Talk Radio as we commemorate the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King on the discussion of “Racism In America Today ~ As It Relates To Dr. Martin Luther King’s Vision.

screen_shot_2012-10-17_at_12_40_07_pmMy special guest on this topic is the Rev. Floyd Thompkins (pictured left), former pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in San Jose CA.
