Gay film ‘Moonlight’ tops Gotham awards

movie-550x405The movie Moonlight is about a young black boy named Chiron who grows up in a rough part of Miami and finally accepts his homosexuality after longing for a boyhood pal.

Moonlight stars Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe and Naomie Harries as Paula, Chiron’s crackhead single mom.

Chiron (played by 3 actors from childhood to adult) is bullied unmercifully by neighborhood thugs, mostly for his small stature and his effeminate nature.

Mahershala Ali plays Juan, the sympathetic neighborhood drug dealer who acts as a father figure to Chiron and teaches the boy to swim.

Monáe plays Juan’s empathetic girlfriend Teresa, who provides Chiron with a safe home away from home.

The following is a quote from a Wikipedia review:

“The only other person Chiron seems to find comfort and companionship in is his best friend Kevin (Jaden Piner), and their sexuality begins to bud when they stay after a dancing class during school to show their genitals to each other.”

Moonlight didn’t do well at the box office for obvious reasons (it grossed $8 million since opening day in October).

Movie News, New Movie Release

“Almost Christmas” is a must see movie!!

mv5bmje4nzezmdcxnl5bml5banbnxkftztgwodc5odgxote-_v1_sx1777_cr001777727_al_The movie clips and commercial promotional for this movie gives the impression that it’s strictly comical, which is a strong misconception. The message is heart-warming, endearing and underlying clear.

Danny Glover (Walter), patriarch of the family, is a retired automotive engineer who lost the love of his life one year earlier. Now that the holiday season is here, he invites his four grown children and the rest of the family home for a traditional holiday celebration. Walter knows that if his daughters Rachel (Gabrielle Union) and Cheryl (Kimberly Elise) and sons Christian (Romany Malco) and Evan (Jessie T. Usher) can spend five days together under the same roof without conflict, it will truly be a Christmas miracle.

The cast is superb! Their performances elevate the message which comes across in the movie…And Monique (as Aunt May), steals the show.

mv5bmjq0mzi2mti1nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmjuxodgxote-_v1_Directed by David E. Talbert, this story touches on marital infidelity, drug dependency and compassion for others, are among the topics of the dramatic threads in this movie, and for the most part, outpaces the serious message in the subplot.

New Movie Release, Tyler Perry

Have you seen, Tyler Perry’s “BOO” A Madea Halloween?

maxresdefaultUnlike his previous movies that began as stage plays, “BOO” a Madea Halloween didn’t originate as a hit stage play. The idea started as a joke in Chris Rock’s hilarious “Top Five,” where the latest Tyler Perry production has Madea fighting off ghosts. Despite the mockery, Perry liked the concept and shot this movie in 6 days.

The movie opened Thursday night and it’s message is clearly for parents and disrespectful teens.

The plot thickens with Madea (Tyler Perry) trying to keep her great niece Tiffany (Diamond White) from attending a Halloween party at the lamest fraternity I have ever seen. When things go horribly awry for the frat, they plot a Halloween-themed vengeance on Madea and her cohorts Aunt Bam (Cassie Davis), Hattie (Patrice Lovely) and Joe (Tyler Perry).

Madea’s nephew Brian (Tyler Perry, again) summons her to his house to keep an eye on his daughter while he’s out of town. He fears she will disobey his orders and attend the frat party. Brian is a doormat whom Tiffany disrespects in ways that would never fly in a Madea-run household. Tiffany’s behavior becomes the basis for the typical whiplash-inducing dramatic change in tone for which Perry’s films are notorious. Before we get there, however, we have to deal with the party, the pranks and the constant bickering between Madea and her crew.

At 103 minutes, this film has way too much dead weight. Scenes are repeated over and over, and some of the acting would not cut it in a school play. But in the rare moments when “Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween” is firing on all cylinders, it displays a cleverness which hints that, with more time and a few more iterations of the script, this might have been a good movie.

I laughed until I cried however, Mr. Tyler Perry could’ve done a little better.

Conversations Of A Sistah, New Movie Release, What she said

Do you remember the book “Side Piece Chronicles?”

Side Piece Chronicles_1The novel written by the talented Joi Miner

Miner was a guest on “Conversations Of A Sistah” back in November/2015., wherein the rules were introduced in side piece relationships. Well I was able to go beyond the title and into her story and sultry tale of adultery, deception, betrayal, sex, threesome sex and more sex.

My mind was so blown away while reading the torrid details of each and every sexual encounter, from one character to the other; it left me shaking my head and shocked by the details. The book is so stifling, it’ll leave you praying that the stories aren’t real, for the sake of deception and sex not running that deep and ever so grimy; amongst those in relationships and love triangles.

There are several scenarios to keep up with and many characters to follow but if sex, deception and mistrust is your cocktail of tales, then “Side Piece Chronicles” will be an exciting read for you!!

Now tell me how many of my readers and followers ordered this book? Miner is about to release the sequel, so let’s prepare ourselves for part 2 of where we left off from the beginning.

Action thriller, New Movie Release

No Good Deed…Extremely unrealistic!

images

Yesterday I saw the crime thriller directed by Sam Miller and written by Aimée Lagos, featuring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson.

Idris Elba (Colin Evans) who is a convicted killer seeking parole and when he’s denied, he kills the two deputies transporting him back to a Tennessee prison and escapes without one all-out police alert or news bulletin for his capture. I mean NO ONE is looking for this convicted cop killer who shows up in Atlanta a day or so later and succeeds at killing his ex-fiancé.

After crashing a truck he had stolen in a very bad rain storm, Colin stumbles upon a home where Taraji P. Henson (Terry) lives with her husband and two children. Only Terry’s husband, played by Henry Simmons (Jeff), is away on an alleged weekend birthday trip with his father. Terry who is a “work at home” lawyer and established prosecutor, is so caught off guard when this tall, dark, handsome stranger rings her doorbell, that she not only leave him at her open front door several times but after inviting him in; she leaves him sitting alone in her dining room while she wonders off continuing her routine while tending to her children.

So what is so unrealistic about this film? Let’s see:

  1. A black man killing two deputies, then escaping on a transport back to prison would’ve been caught by sun down, because his face would’ve been plastered all over the news on every channel.
  2. The first place authorities scope is the home of anyone the escape convict is looking to avenge.
  3. Colin’s ex-fiancé laid dead without anyone ever noticing she’s missing until the end.
  4. Terry opens her front door to a stranger without question or reluctance on a dark stormy night, even though she’s home alone with her two children.
  5. Terry with so much trust and confidence invites this fine stranger into her home and carelessly leave him alone several times as if he’s a trusted friend.

Terry’s behavior in the movie annoyed the hell out of me, simply because she was not only careless while jeopardizing the safety of her children in her home but she was trusting and distracted based upon Colin’s looks. Colin’s presentation blinded her to the fact that, she never suspected he could be a killer. The fact that she was extremely naïve in this situation as a lawyer and prosecutor with experience in the behaviors of a killer, made it all the more unrealistic.

There were several cries to protest this movie because it supposedly portrayed black men in a negative light. Colin a convict who brutally kills his ex-fiancé who happens to be white. Terry a desperate, attention seeking, deprived, stay at home mom, so distracted to get her groove on that she jeopardizes the safety of her children. I didn’t see the reason for the boycott of this film at all, I found it entertaining and suspenseful with a great storyline, however unrealistically scripted. The producer paired two awesome actors in an intense dramatic thriller as characters who vaguely resemble anything realistic to take their roles seriously.
