Jordan Peele makes history as 1st black director to gross $100 million

Jordan Peele made movie history this weekend, becoming the first black writer-director to gross $100 million at the box office.

The Blumhouse Productions psychological thriller Get Out also became the movie house’s first $100 million movie.

Blumhouse made the film on a $4 million budget and a cast of unknowns, including a lead actor from across the pond.

Get Out‘s racial overtones helped push the movie over the $100 million threshold.

Movie houses are lining up to sign Peele to multimillion dollar contracts for his next film.

Peele, 38, made a name for himself as one half of the comedy duo Kay and Peele.

Peele and his wife Chelsea Peretti, 39, are expecting their first baby together.

“Get Out” The horror film that shows it’s scary to be a black man in America!

untitledAfter a notably devastating year for race relations in the US, Jordan Peele’s directorial debut “Get Out” may be a hit but causing an understandable stir.

The plot focuses on Chris (Sicario’s Daniel Kaluuya), a black man planning to meet the parents of his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) for the first time. But from the outset, something seems off. An uncomfortable encounter with a local cop puts them – and us – on edge and once they arrive at the family’s home and get settled, Chris becomes aware of increasingly strange, and potentially murderous, behavior. A major element of the movie.

It’s a thrilling conceit and one hopes that “Get Out” might signal a trend of culturally relevant horror films from film-makers of color.

While “Get Out” will act as entertainment predominantly (it’s from Blumhouse, the production company behind Insidious and The Purge), with daily reports of black men killed for the color of their skin, it’s also a vital reminder that racism remains a more terrifying force than any supernatural boogeyman.

“Get Out” is in theatres on February 24, 2017.

Gay film ‘Moonlight’ tops Gotham awards

movie-550x405The movie Moonlight is about a young black boy named Chiron who grows up in a rough part of Miami and finally accepts his homosexuality after longing for a boyhood pal.

Moonlight stars Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe and Naomie Harries as Paula, Chiron’s crackhead single mom.

Chiron (played by 3 actors from childhood to adult) is bullied unmercifully by neighborhood thugs, mostly for his small stature and his effeminate nature.

Mahershala Ali plays Juan, the sympathetic neighborhood drug dealer who acts as a father figure to Chiron and teaches the boy to swim.

Monáe plays Juan’s empathetic girlfriend Teresa, who provides Chiron with a safe home away from home.

The following is a quote from a Wikipedia review:

“The only other person Chiron seems to find comfort and companionship in is his best friend Kevin (Jaden Piner), and their sexuality begins to bud when they stay after a dancing class during school to show their genitals to each other.”

Moonlight didn’t do well at the box office for obvious reasons (it grossed $8 million since opening day in October).

“Almost Christmas” is a must see movie!!

mv5bmje4nzezmdcxnl5bml5banbnxkftztgwodc5odgxote-_v1_sx1777_cr001777727_al_The movie clips and commercial promotional for this movie gives the impression that it’s strictly comical, which is a strong misconception. The message is heart-warming, endearing and underlying clear.

Danny Glover (Walter), patriarch of the family, is a retired automotive engineer who lost the love of his life one year earlier. Now that the holiday season is here, he invites his four grown children and the rest of the family home for a traditional holiday celebration. Walter knows that if his daughters Rachel (Gabrielle Union) and Cheryl (Kimberly Elise) and sons Christian (Romany Malco) and Evan (Jessie T. Usher) can spend five days together under the same roof without conflict, it will truly be a Christmas miracle.

The cast is superb! Their performances elevate the message which comes across in the movie…And Monique (as Aunt May), steals the show.

mv5bmjq0mzi2mti1nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmjuxodgxote-_v1_Directed by David E. Talbert, this story touches on marital infidelity, drug dependency and compassion for others, are among the topics of the dramatic threads in this movie, and for the most part, outpaces the serious message in the subplot.
