“Is Teenage Pregnacy An Epidemic?”

Teenage pregnancy has evolved from a shameful situation to a symbol of status in many high schools across the U.S.

In June 2008, allegations that a teenage pregnancy pact existed at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts, which resulted in 17 pregnancies in a school of 1200 students; rocked their town of a large catholic population.

While as of September 2010, there were “75” pregnant teenage girls walking the halls of Passaic High School in Passaic, NJ. far more obvious that, what was once a shunned condition now seems glamorous.

Shows like “Teen moms” and others, that favor a hip Hollywood version of life as a ‘baby mama’ bombard teens with the message that being loved is all that really matters. And for those teens unsure about themselves and their relationships, the desire for some form of unconditional love leads many to think motherhood will satisfy that longing.

However, in Memphis, Tennessee, when Frayser High School put their town in a national spotlight with as many as ‘90‘ students pregnant, the mayors of Memphis and Shelby county were ready to get to work to reverse the statistics.

“I want to make one thing clear — the matter of teenage pregnancy is not something that was invented in Frayser or Boxtown, or Midtown, or any particular part of our city,” the mayor said. “Frayser doesn’t have a patent or trademark on this issue. These are not statistics, these are people and tragically [the] most venerable people.”

Memphis City Schools curriculum now offers 9th graders a family life education course, that has a heavy emphasis on abstinence from sex outside of marriage. The school district is going to be rolling out a new “No Baby” program in hopes to help curtail the large number of teen pregnancies.

The new program presented by Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization that teaches women’s empowerment, will incorporate Facebook and text messaging as a part of the “in your face” efforts to teach the girls “how to say no” to sex. ‘No Baby’ will also push abstinence and will not give out any form of contraceptives.

Now that’s an action plan to believe in.

    1. Those same 90 girls would’ve been pregnant whether 16&pregnant was on air or not.

      People need to STOP Trying to place blame where it doesn’t belong. Those 90 girls need to take responsibility for their actions they should know by now that, sex could lead to pregnancy &/or deadly disease & where are those damn parents?

  9. They don’t know what they’re doing? They know exactly what they’re doing. I don’t believe in accidental pregnancies anymore. If you’re having sex and you deliberately choose not to use condoms or any kind of birth control you’re just asking to get pregnant. There’s no excuse.

  11. Ladies – get a man to marry you FIRST – then have his children. Having children is the most important thing you can do in your life. It should take more than a moment to decide if a person is good enough to have a baby with.

    Who the FREAK is going to pay for these children to EAT.

    Mothers get a grip on your daughters. Forget the guys – they are always going to want some. Mothers teach your daughters some morals and self-esteem – Pleaseeeeeeeeeee.

Protect your future require condoms to protect yourself from std’s and ALWAYS use female contraceptives before you become sexually active to protect yourself from becoming pregnant. Pregnancy is a CHOICE and is 100% preventable.

  13. The public school cannot replace teachings that should be happening at home. I wouldn’t trust any state sponsored curriculum to teach my daughter about woman’s empowerment. That should be done by the mother and father at home.

    Plus, targeting just the female actually degrades her. Its telling these girls “You are the bad one”. It takes two to make a baby.

  14. In england, when you get pregnant at 16 you get state benifits., free housing, free schooling, free child care, free health care it’s like you are actually rewarded because of this people.

    Some of those girls in england, even have kids for the money. To be a mom at 16 is the in thing in that country.

And teach the same to the girls, if you dont want to be tied down to this person forever, dont lay down with them. Its all fun a games while the baby is young. Its when they get around the age of 10 when you will realize “Hey I really need help”

  20. What is so hard about using a condom or getting birth control? Better yet, stop having irresponsible underage sex period and go to school and learn something. Everyone is pointing the finger and saying what a shame, but no one is encouraging abstinence.
