A true story written and directed by a young Ryan Coogler, the film recreates the last day in the life of Oscar Grant. The 22-year-old unarmed black man in Oakland, CA who was shot and killed by a Bart Transit police office on New Years day 2009.
The film won the two top prizes at the Sundance Film Festival and has become a cause to be negative amongst critics. Activists are seizing the opportunity to promote the movie, which calls for justice and implies that nothing like it has occurred yet, since the cop who shot and killed Oscar Grant only served 11 months in prison and Grant’s family has prevailed in a large civil suit.
Grant’s character who is played by 22-year-old subject (Michael B. Jordan), who was a small-time criminal who cheated on his girlfriend and had been fired from a job at a grocery store. All of these flaws are depicted in the film, but nevertheless “Fruitvale Station,” a debut effort from young filmmaker Ryan Coogler, tries to fit a halo on its subject, seemingly to play up the audience’s sympathies and it works.
Despite Grants shortcomings the film show that he was an ordinary, everyday black man struggling to make his life right and did not deserve to be shot in the back by a cop while lying face down on a subway platform.
Although the movie is a true story, it fails to deliver more of the point that the shooting was a cover-up. The many witnesses, spectators and friends of Oscar Grant had cell phone footage of the shooting, yet their cell phones were confiscated illegally by police officers before they got off the train that New Years Eve.
Warning: Fresh off the heels of a George Zimmerman “not guilty” verdict, this film is a tear jerker that will piss you off into the reality of the injustices to all unarmed African American men being killed all over this country.
Support this film because those right wing conservatives don’t want to ignite the truth for you to view!
Thanks Tracy. A lot people know the story which is why I believe they don’t want to see the movie.

That’s because you knew the story. most of the movie goers know the boy will eventually die. But seeing that on a big screen was heart-breaking and when his daughter see that (because they won’t allow her to see it until she’s in her teens) it’s gonna tare her heart out all over again.

Coogler, an Oakland native, recalls hearing about the news of the incident from friends that night. “It was just horrifying,” Coogler has said of the shooting. “He looked like us; I mean that could’ve been any one of us there.” Star Michael B. Jordan, who plays Grant, has echoed similar sentiments: “It’s something that gets you upset. It could’ve been me. It could’ve been my brother. It could’ve been one of my friends.”

Cop took that lil girl’s father. He meant to tase him? How da fuck do you confuse a taser with a gun? One you touch the person with and the other you hold at some distance and shoot, but aren’t police taught to fire a warning shot before they actually aim at their target? Hope that cop ROT in his own hell.
LikeLike
My thing is this, with Oscar Grant already lying on his stomach, face down, and not moving much, and in handcuffs too, he was no threat to the cop and needed no further subduing. So no gun of any type needed to be pulled on him at that point! That boy died for nothing! 😦
LikeLike
The other cop in the train station that day who was running around yelling obscenities contributed to Mehserle’s state of mind. I think the BART brass would agree with me, since they fired him too.

Zenna,
I Cosign…..Watching the cellphone video it looks like they already had him subdued so there was time to make sure you had the taser instead of the gun. Just sad. 😦 I remember when this happened there being a discussion about why the officer didn’t know his gun from his taser.

Oscar Grant took a cell phone picture of BART officer Johannes Mehserle holding a Taser, just moments before he pulled his gun and shot and killed Grant on a BART platform on New Year’s Day 2009.
In a pre-trial hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court, Alameda County Prosecutor David Stein said he plans to use the photo as evidence that Mehserle knew the difference between his Taser and his gun, just before he shot and killed Grant.
Defense attorney Michael Rains plans to argue Mehserle mistook his gun for his Taser.

Ya know when New Year’s eve came in the movie you sit there saying “Please don’t go or drive like he wanted too” but we all know that didn’t happen. And it was his mother who encouraged them to take the train, now she has to live with that. The girlfriend Sophina will live with the memory of what happened every New Years Eve for the rest of her life. 😦 Oh God this movie is sad…Just so unfortunate!!

Its important for people to remember that the cop who shot this UN-armed man in his BACK and killed him….. that cop only got 11 months in jail for that killing.
The media did a study of the sentence and determined that the sentence was only 1/3 of what mere, not-important civilians get sentenced to for the same criminal violation.
The corrupt farce of a “justice system” had to act… because the event was huge news….. but that corrupt farce of a system did its best to protect the killer cop.
Its also important to realize that several cops lost their jobs for perjury due to the LIES they fabricated in an attempt to protect one another from legal prosecution. They didn’t count on the BART station surveillance videos recording the event… and contradicting their LIES.

An impressive debut, but this was like the Sundance version of a Hallmark movie.
Oscar Grant obviously didn’t deserve to be shot to death while being restrained, so I don’t think we need a bunch of “look at what a great person he was – he’s a wonderful dad, a loving boyfriend, son, brother, a lover of stray dogs and strangers looking for fish at the grocery store” to feel the humanity and injustice of the situation.
To be completely honest, I felt more empathy watching the cell phone video of the incident than the rest of the film. Still, some beautiful performances and a solid debut for a filmmaker.

It’s a shame this young, unarmed black man died senselessly and left a family to grieve and cope with such an injustice. Not only an injustice to them but an injustice to us all, Oscar Grant today my family member tomorrow. We’re all in the same boat, which is why we need to lean on a higher power to see us through.
Peace y’all enjoy your Sunday!
