“Tyler Perry’s Movie Murdered By Critics”

The multi-tasking movie maker has done it again, Tyler Perry’s new movie “For Colored Girls” hits theatres on November 5 with an all-star cast featuring Janet Jackson, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg and Thandie Newton just to name a few.

However my good friend “CB” who is an editor to movie critics said, “the reviews were written and they are not good.” “They killed it and called “For Colored Girls” — “a train wreck.” “They didn’t like it and said it was a step back for Tyler Perry”.

Why kill the film two weeks early? He said, “The studio wanted early publicity”

Last week, Perry appeared on “Oprah” in a show that appeared to be more like a psychiatric session; the over-sharing of Perry’s sexual abuse as a child, didn’t do much to promote the movie

Perry adapted the original play by Ntozake Shange‘s “For Colored Girls,” a string of poems that depicted the lives of black women in the 1970s. Of course Perry changed the script and added his own spin to this new version.

Will you see “For Colored Girls” when it opens nationwide on November 5?

  5. This movie was made for (Black women) and black women are going to show up at movie theaters acoss the country in DROVES to see this powerful film.

  6. The movie was pinned 2weeks early because of some bullshit oscar buzz, they said the same thing with precious and that was garbage. Tyler Perry and Oscar should never be mentioned within 500 words of one another.

    1. Omar, I AGREE!!!!! He has no chance of winning an oscar with his own bullshit. So he attached himself to Lee Daniels Precious as a producer and now he’s trying to rape Shange’s poem. It’s incredibly offensive IMO.

      1. Omar, as I recall Perry wasn’t a producer of Precious. He didn’t have producing rights. He was a “sponsor” or spokes person and that was to get the general public behind the movie. He was no more producer than Oprah was.

It doesn’t matter if this is the only movie with black actors — Tyler PErry has no artistic vision or skill. and i heard he give the black men in this film a very bad depiction. it’s bad enough white folk see our men as the endangered no good species, we don’t need to see that shit being depicted on film. by a black fagg none the less.

  9. What I don’t get is this: the poem/play is 30 years old – what madness compelled him to make it NOW? Or did the author need a stash of cash because she’s experiencing med problems? As I recall this was a heartbreaking play about women and their difficulties with men primarily. Abortions, rape, all the sad things happening to black women. and now TP is gonna drudge that shit up again.??

  10. as sad and twisted as it sounds, i believe tra’s friend cb. why? cause tyler perry is “captain save a ho” if you’re career is dead or half way dead, he will pick you for his films in an effort to save it. look, he chose whoopi and he was on the view just the other day. he knows what he’s doing but he’s still a “captain save a ho”

  17. Tyler Perry knows his audience. He doesn’t need to prove/show Hollywood anything – he built his own studio in Atlanta. I suppose he did it For Colored Girls because he wanted to. It doesn’t matter if it’s not very good. It will make money anyway – guaranteed. when we can’t bust down the original barriers we bust them down by building our own.

When I found out that Perry was going to attempt to direct a work of this magnitude with his limited, coonish vision, I just sighed and asked myself; “Why?” It will be a box office draw and make lots of money during the opening but it is unfortunate for those who have never read the original. I hope after they see his version they will.

  19. everyones taste is different! those same critics would prefer to see us in a the negative stereotypical films about African Americans that show African Aricans in this negative light, where we are seen as helpless, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, diseased and hopeless. I think Mr. Perry is on the right track, he’s bringing black film full circle, thinking outside of the box and creating a whole new generation of black films with positive messages and meaning.

I co-sign you and even suggest that every African American steer away from critics like this and go see the film, let it be a big turn out on opening days, because as history has shown, African Americans have lost touch with our heritage, and not being able to tell our stories, in our schools, in life because “they” don’t want us to have a story, or history. Case and point, our President after his term will be soon forgotten because they will make sure that he made no difference and his legacy was in vain. So we need to “own” who we are, love who we are and make sure “they” don’t forget who we are.

  20. Maybe Tyler Perry should come out of the closet first, make a “It Gets Better” freaky video, and then try to direct a real film. “For Colored Girls” needed special handling and instead i’m sure he FUCKED it up!!! with a dull azz cast.

    1. @BAMMA: Tyler Perry’s gender and/or his sexuality – whether he’s open, closeted, confused or isn’t sure about it – doesn’t necessarily prevent him from interpreting the poem of an African American woman exploring issues of race, politics, sexuality, femininity and relationships. It takes a highly artistic, sensitive, and talented WRITER and DIRECTOR to do this original piece successfully. Could be male, female, straight or gay; in the closet or out of the closet; African American or not. Remember what Spielberg did with The Color Purple. Who knew? We’ll have to come to our own conclusions after we see the film for ourselves.

    4. @Starr, I saw the play and I know Tyler will do a great job by honoring the essence of the characters mostly because I have confidence in the ladies who portray the main characters!

      Tyler was smart enough to get the best thespians out there to portray these strong characters! These thespians are also independent thinkers…who don’t have a problem with expressing how they know a scene should be done!

      In terms of him making changes…anyone who saw the play knows that in order to turn it into a movie…you have to make some changes.

      Will I see it? YES I WILL!!!!

We also should appreciate the fact that TP is bringing this WORK of ART into rotation for another generation of Women, it is important that this piece of work does not get lost. We’ll have a renewed interest and smart young women will seek out the book, the play and READ it- that’s important!

    1. I don’t like his films as a rule but I do love the cast that he (?) chose for this movie. The depth of skill and passion that these strong women bring to the table regardless of the movie is captivating; when the topic is so close to home it should be POWERFUL.

      Definitely a must see for all, in my opinion. However, Tyler will be judged. I hope he knows this.

      When the movie succeeds the cast will be championed. If the movie fails, he will be crucified.

  32. From what I’ve seen of Tyler Perry movies, a majority of them are telling the same story over and over again so I hope that won’t be the case with this movie. From the looks of the trailer it seems like it might be more original so I’m looking forward to seeing it Trace.

  43. This movie comes at a time when Black America is faced with some of the greatest challenges that man will ever endure. Our love and love for each other and the dedication that comes with it is going through trials and tribulations, our Black women are the building that sits on the foundation of the Black man. When the Black man is troubled, she is twice as likely to feel the pain. This movie adopted from the play Colored Girls Who Have Considered suiside, is a master piece of a play, and I hope the movie follows the story line, if it does we are in for a great box office hit. Please Black people go out and see this movie.
