“Cops Are Killing Our Young Black Men”

This story sounds too much like what supposedly happened in the Sean Bell incident.

Only this time, cops fatally shot a Pace University football player early Sunday after he supposedly ran down officers during a brawl outside of a Westchester County bar, police said.

It is being reported that officers tried to contain several fights in the parking lot at Finnegan’s Grill, but Danroy Henry wasn’t involved in any of those fights when an officer asked him to move his vehicle, which was parked in a fire lane.

Danroy Henry, 20, (pictured above), a junior defensive back studying at Pace University campus, stepped on the gas, knocking a Pleasantville cop onto the hood, according to police.

A second cop tried to pull the officer off the hood but was knocked to the ground, when Henry continued to accelerate, the officer clinging to the windshield pulled out his gun and fired several shots, police said.

An officer from the Mount Pleasant police, who was in the path of the oncoming car, also opened fire. The bullet-riddled vehicle then slammed into a police cruiser and came to a halt.
Henry, a business management major from North Easton, Mass., was declared dead at Westchester Medical Center.

A passenger, identified as Brandon Cox, 20 – a childhood friend of Henry’s and a running back for Stonehill College, which beat Pace 27-0 in Saturday’s homecoming game – suffered a minor gunshot wound.

A third passenger, Desmond Hinds, a 21-year-old receiver on the Pace team who is from Stamford, Conn., was unhurt. The two cops were treated for minor injuries.

Hinds’ father, Desmond Hinds Sr., said the young men weren’t involved in the fight and called the shooting “senseless.”

“There were no guns or drugs or knives in the car and now somebody is dead for no reason,” he said. “They didn’t even know about a fight. They were waiting for two of their friends … There was no reason to fire shots.”

      1. @Ebony., after all that action, sounds like the officers are trying to justify firing the shots. Seems funny that they were only “slightly” injured2. What do the surviving players, and other witnesses say? That’s what I wanna hear. I wanna hear from the survivors.

    3. So there was a group of unruly patrons, and one patron was trying to leave the place and you shoot him? Did he commit a crime or kill anyone? They could’ve just let him leave and pulled him over within few blocks! Not sure parking a car on a fire lane warrants to get shot..

The police generally have far to much discretion concerning who gets charged with what and the information that gets released. this story has bullshit written all over it.

  8. Does anyone remember the woman about a month or so ago, who was pulled over in Nassau County & then took off when the cop got out of his patrol car? Well, if I remember correctly, she hit two cops with her car, went through three towns while the cops pursued her. Then she rammed 18 different squad cars before she was stopped & arrested. Now why wasn’t she shot to death? Oh wait, she was a white woman, my bad!

Notice how the father made that clear, the cops will have a very hard time trying to justify their actions. Can’t wait to see hos this will unfold.

  10. “Hinds’ father.. called the shooting ‘senseless.'”– Uhm, no. Senseless is having a cop knock on your window and then you hitting the gas, tossing one cop onto your hood and then almost running down two more. THAT’s “senseless”.

      1. Ashanti, how can they say it was senseless? I understand that they are hurting from their loss, but the kid RAN OVER a policeman! He had to have been doing something he wasn’t supposed to, otherwise why would he try to drive off with a police officer on his car?

  13. First of all, it is a tragedy when a young person lose their life in this manner. But a few questions must be answered, Why did the car speed away when the kids were approached by the officers. Not to say that cops don’t step outside their boundaries from time to time, but I was raised to respect law enforcement, if a cop approaches you, you respond to his requests. If this story is true and the officers acted using proper protocol, then what got the kid killed was his fault. We are living in a generation of kids that are being taught to question all authority, not respect, that is why these mindless tragedies occur. As far as the cops firing so quickly, when you have a 3,000 bullet coming at you, or you are on the hood of a car speeding away, your only defense is to use deadly force, after all, the person driving the car was using deadly force, intended or not. I say all that to say this, if and I say if the facts are correct, then we need to wake up and teach our young generation better.

    1. @Valerie Perry, RIP sad story, tough to make an opinion either way with the details as reported above, regardless it does not take away from this tragic event.

      Like

    2. @valerie, Standard police practice is to approach a stopped vehicle from behind the driver on the driver’s side. Had this procedure been followed, the officer would not have been hit by the car as it either backed up or accelerated forward. This reeks of the same cover-up as the gunning down of a young Black man, coming out of a club after his bachelor party, in Flushing, Queens, NY, two years ago. It will be interesting to see what the cameras on the patrol cars actually taped and what the by-standers claim actually went down.

When you send your child to college you have the greatest hopes for them and this is something that doesn’t even cross your mind… RIP.

    1. @Fab1, something is very fishy about this story. I am sorry for the young man’s family, but a fair question would be why he decided to speed off if the officer just wanted to speak with him and kept at a fast pace? Obviously he tried to allude the officers but why? Another senseless death that should have never happened

      1. damn right something’s fishy @ Fab1…The cops shoot to kill when the person is a young black male and that’s never ok. yet that’s what happened.

  15. Yet one has to wonder what was the young man thinking when trying to get away from the cops and almost or actually running over another officer? If things pan out as reported, it was a good shoot for the cops, bad for the young man. One went home and the other didnt! Again, when the nice poh-lice person says STOP, they mean STOP! Don’t be foolish

    1. @Audrey, the cop had not been hit and was on the hood, he was hit by the side mirror and then shot. They fired eight rounds and four hit the kid. They then pulled him out of the car and handcuffed him and stood on him while he was on the ground bleeding, and the cops pointed their guns at and kept people back who were trying to reach him and try to stop him from bleeding.

      Like

      1. @Ebony, If it is going slow enough for cops to “get hit” and stay on the hood, and other cops to catch it on foot, then it is going slow enough to get a car type and a license plate, even a description of the driver. The cop’s goal was to stop the car from leaving, and they succeeded. It sounds more like a college kid probably knows he should have not been there, or may have been involved and was trying to “sneak” away, vs. Speed away.

Again, story does not hold water.

        Like

      2. EXACTLY! why shoot??? get the plate…let the car go…why the focus on this car? why kill a young kid? it’s troubling…i hope the truth is exposed. cops need to stop using deadly force with such little reason.

      3. why not shoot his tires@Mrs, i don’t know why they didn’t opt instead to shoot out the tires…look at the bullet holes in the windshield…they shot him point blank in the head/face…there must have been other options to stop him…This is bullshit and i’m pissed from reading and hearing this.

    2. @Audrey, Fact is look at the damn hood of the car and windshield. Do you see any damage other then bullet holes? The answer is no. If this young man hit a police officer going at a high rate of speed there would be damage of this and there isnt.

Please black men, don’t run, just stand their and be arrested. All of us black people know that cops are out to kill us, and we also know that cops are the biggest criminals in the world. They say this guy tried to run over 2 cops?. This is the same EXCUSE the cops used when they brutally killed Sean Bell.

  26. The police story differs from the witnesses at the scene. The witnesses said that the car was in a fire lane as the student was waiting to pick up a friend from a homecoming celebration. The police officer tapped on the window, and the student thought he was telling him to drive off. The police officer ran in front of the car, and began shooting. There were many witnesses (white students, not that it should matter, but it will) that said that the police shot for no reason. The students that witnessed the event were very emotional, and detailed in their retelling of the tragedy.
There is always a rush to judgement when it comes to African American males.

    1. @Ashanti, and it still doesn’t constitute fatally shooting him. They only know how to aim for the head and chest now days? what was so wrong with aiming for the boys tires?

      Like

      1. @Angel-hair, Just not rolling down the window should not be a death sentence. The student thought the police was telling him to drive because he was standing in a fire-lane. I can’t say that I wouldn’t have done the same. African Americans should not have to guess how the police will react to them in otherwise benign situations, but alas, we do…….

And, what about it “raises a red flag?” All accounts said that the student was a stellar student, vouched for by friends, neighbors, relatives, teachers, and coaches. The Pace Coach commented that “he was the best athlete on the team.” So, pray tell…Where’s the “red flag” again?

      4. @Angel-Hair, I think any reasonable person would question the actions of cops involved in any fatal shooting. OR are you naive enough to think a lot of police officers aren’t corrupt. That many are also hypocritical and get into bar fights, drive drunk and smoke pot while arresting others for doing the same…..

Most cops pick and choose how to enforce the law. Whenever a young person is gunned down by cops you should demand a very in depth investigation into the matter.

    Like

    1. I agree Civil, cops can and do act belligerently, because they have the law behind them. And if you are black they can get aggressive very quickly due to racial prejudice. Most young black men have probably had a run in or two with police due to nothing more than racial profiling, and as a result, they may well panic if they are stopped even if they know they have done nothing wrong because of the way that cops behave towards them. The incident is really unfortunate, for both the police and the victim.
