“Heavy D Saw A Doctor, The Day Before He Died”

According to the NY Daily News, rapper Heavy D saw a doctor the day before he died tragically at age 44.

Rap legend Heavy D knew something was seriously wrong with his health the day before he suddenly collapsed and died Tuesday, officials told the Daily News.

“He had gone to the doctor the day before,” Ed Winter, Assistant Chief of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, told the Daily News. “He had what appeared to be like flu-like symptoms.”

“He was taking medication, so we want to see what the levels were,” Winter said.

Heavy D, whose real name was Dwight Arrington Myers, had just gotten back from a trip to England. “He said he had a touch of pneumonia, maybe from traveling,” his cousin, Ruddy Phillips, told The News.

But Heavy D also could have died from a pulmonary embolism, a fatal consequence of sitting for prolonged periods of time during long distance travel. Pulmonary embolism are often misdiagnosed as something else — such as pneumonia or cardiac arrest.

According to the Daily News, an autopsy was completed Wednesday morning, but a preliminary cause of death won’t be released until toxicology tests are performed. The tests could take up to six weeks to complete.

  7. Heavy was indeed that dude, with crazy hits. I was jammin my azz off when he performed on the BET awards. I can’t believe he’s gone. VH1 Soul played all his videos the night he died, and last night.

Good doctors ask a lot of questions, such as “Do you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain in your legs? and “Did you just get back from overseas?” If Heavy D was complaining of flu-like symptoms after just getting off a plane from England, a good doctor would have drawn his blood and run a scan on him. Pulmonary embolism often gets misdiagnosed because doctors don’t do the basics such as asking the right questions.

    – Its almost impossible to misdiagnose a PE (pulmonary embolism).
    ex. SOB + hypoxia + clear c-xray + risk factor = PE

    Anyone with an MD knows this – doubt he died of a PE.

        And what if Heavy D wasn’t hypoxic? And what if the doctor didn’t think to get a chest x-ray? You can’t say it’s “impossible” to misdiagnose PE because there are documented cases that proves it happens a lot.

      3. He sounds like he threw a clot…pulmonary embolism. Those things will take you out so fast and if he was that big and just flown from Europe it’s highly likely.

        I pray he was not scared or alone when he passed. That would be the absolute worst.
