“The Judge Don’t Care About The Rev. Calvin Butts”

Who wants to post bail for Afrika Owes…a 17 year old prep-school student (pictured above), who is being held on Rikers’ Island for allegedly running guns and drugs for her boyfriend, who is apart of a 137th street gang in Harlem.

And because Africa refuses to “snitch” on her boyfriend and his crew, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge has rejected Rev. Calvin Butts and Abyssinian Baptist church’ offer to post or reduce the teen’s $50,000 bail.

“The judge does not understand,” Butts said. “The poor man has been confused because he has come face-to-face with the body of Christ. When the body of Christ stands up, it confuses people.”

The prep-school teen is not cooperating with authorities out of misplaced loyalty to her boyfriend, Jaquan Layne, aka “Jay Cash” or simply “Jay” who is said to be the head of the crew; and is the lead name in the indictment. Most of the 137th street crew gang members (including Africa’s boyfriend) are still at large.

Raised in Harlem, NY and a young teen with promise, Africa was a member of Abyssinian Baptist Church and its choir. The Rev. Calvin Butts compared Owes to Patty Hearst, the heiress who was kidnapped by radicals in 1974 and joined her captors in robbing banks.

Hearst spent two years in jail before former President Jimmy Carter commuted her sentence and former President Bill Clinton pardoned her.

“If Patty Hearst can have a chance, why can’t we take that chance on Afrika?” Butts said. “It’s not just for Afrika, it’s for hundreds of thousands like her. We have to stand for all of our young people who have been unjustly incarcerated.”

Unjustly incarcerated? Really? Owes is charged, among other things, with holding loaded guns for the gang. Authorities said they recorded a phone conversation in which her boyfriend, alleged crew leader Jaquan Layne, advises her “head shots only,” if she has to use one of the weapons herself.

So Butts and his body of Christ better pray and pray hard, because God upholds that which is “right and just” in His sight.

    2. Cosign, the girl is not some ignorant innocent. She’s exceptionally smart, and she knew better. Since a great deal is being made of her church involvement, then I would expect that Ms. Owes would be familiar with the Biblical truth “To whom much is given, much is expected”.

  2. Ms. Owes is bright enough to know the consequences for her actions. She made a very clear choice to break the law for some thug gangster. Someone of her intelligence should feel the full weight of the law for her actions.

      This chick should have known better. When you have meaningful goals in life you don’t align yourself with losers. You can’t expect to go to an Ivy League school while having a drug dealer as a boyfriend. They are not at your level. They will only drag you down out of hatred and jealousy.

      Now due to this young woman’s poor choices, she will either fear for her life or rot away in prison. Sad.

  4. Her minister is trying to make “spiritual” that which is “physical”. If Afriika, is truly “Godly” sorry she would tell the truth, face her punishment and do better when she is free. That is what the church should be telling her….not upholding her in wrong.

    This is indeed the case of the black female attracted to the fast life of glitter and gold. I bet she has a lot of young black dudes whose smart like her and want to be with her but she’ll have none of it.       1. This little girl should cooperate under the condition that they provide protection for her thoughout the Summer. Forget going to Columbia, NYU, or Penn – apply to Stanford, Harvard, or some other school with a good amount of distance from NYC.

        Then ask for a decent level of protection even while in school whether that protection be supported by the church or local government.

      Sorry, but I’m one of those people that hates the “no snitch” rule. For example, you expect me to keep my mouth shut about my friend taking someone’s life? You serious? I’ll be the FIRST to call the police! Call me evil and disloyal if you want, but just because you’re my friend doesn’t mean I’ll let you get away with something that’s obviously wrong. Too many bad things happen and go unsolved because people choose to keep their mouths shut. It’s so sick and the rule needs to disappear.

      Some folks are just book smart, not street smart. She wanted to rebel against the “goody to s.h.o.e” image & show she was a “ride or die chick”….And, she is standing her ground

      At least she loyal, BUT this is a valuable lesson of being careful WHO u or ur child hangs out with or date. Dating/friendship decisions can b life or death and this is one of them.

  28. Regardless of whether she tells or not, her life has taken a drastic turn. She’ll be really really lucky if Columbia or NYU give her the time of day. Young people need to realize their potential and treasure it, not throw it away on the “hood life”. I hope she bounces back from this and is able to get a quality education and make something good of her life.
