“Was It Really -A- Suicide… Or A Lynching?”

Frederick Jermaine Carter was found on December 3, with his body hanging from an oak tree in North Greenwood, MS, a predominantly white section of Leflore County in Mississippi.

North Greenwood is known as an area that black people are sometimes afraid to visit. Carter was with his stepfather, who said that he wandered off from an area in which they were both working.

County Sheriff Ricky Banks told the media that a mental condition led to Carter drifting off and hanging himself. He also said that there is no evidence that there was a crime committed, but the community is outraged that the location of Carter’s death was never taped off as a crime scene and they also believe that the investigation was inadequate.

Greenwood has a stain on its national reputation when it comes to aggressive behavior toward African-Americans.

Just 10 miles north of the town is where Emmett Till was murdered in 1955. Till’s alleged killers were acquitted of the crime, even though the boy was shot in the head and had his eyes gouged out. Till’s attackers were angry that he’d allegedly whistled at a white woman.

There are a lot of unanswered questions here and State Senator David Jordan has offered to help the family, saying that he doesn’t buy the story being presented by authorities:

There are a lot of unanswered questions. Carter supposedly had rope in his pocket but didn’t have anything to cut it with? Why wasn’t the scene of the crime blocked off? That tree limb is nearly 12 feet high., I’m 6’2″ and I can’t see how I could maneuver to do that, so how could a boy his height hang himself like that?” said Jordan.

The mysterious death of Frederick Jermaine Carter shows all the classic signs of significant injustice. Given the history of Mississippi, what do you think?

      1. Yes the photo is disturbing but the STORY is far more disturbing! Maybe “QUEEN” posted the picture to encourage reading the story.

Really? I think the photo is very important and appropiate, it shows the hate and lynching of yet another black man. and it also shows that whoever did this, is still living those laws and beliefs that their ancestors carried out. The trick is to show the photo, in order to show ‘the reality’ of yesterday’s hatred that still is VERY RELEVANT today. so face it people!

      3. I agree that the picture is quite disturbing, however I think it does need to be posted. Everyone needs to understand the seriousness of what has happened. This picture shows up close and personal that racism is still alive.

NO ONE COULD DO THIS TO THEMSELVES. The fact that none of the major media outlets have chosen to cover this is a story in itself. SMDH Thank you Ms. Bell for posting this.

    2. @ACE,
Considering the number of black people murdered and incarcerated by this racist society every year nothing is as they say it is, and they are never to be trusted. If you accept what these dangerous police in any part of the country say you are a fool.

This young man did not hang himself, the evidence has been botched on purpose and no one will do this case justice because ‘blacks’ are not respected, nor feared in this country.

  6. what do you think?

I think it’s a grave injustice that many people refuse to believe that racism, bigotry and discrimination are still rampant in this country. Black men and women are being violated, killed and mistreated everyday. and this brotha was no different and yes he was murdered!

  7. what do you think?

I think the young man was murdered by the same kinds of whites who would bomb a city building full of black people, a black church, or any level of a black community. This shit is 2sad in 2011.

  11. What a shame. Why hasn’t this situation gotten more press? This is my first time hearing of this. The value that white america puts on a Black life is nothing and something needs to be done about it. I hope that this young man’s family uses every resource that they can, including the federal government to find out who did this stomach turning act. If this town was known to be hostile against blacks, investigating this as a crime should have happened immediately. I hope justice is served and this family can get closure.

    1. Lexy, African-Americans do not commit suicide that often, I’d say he was probably lynched but authorities are not going to say that because they do not want to rile anyone up!!

But…I bet the Tea Party provided the rope !

  13. I dont think this was a suicide But if a white person were to go into a black neighborhood he would likely be shot to death rather than hung. So there is racism on both side of the tracks.

  14. I lived in Greenwood for 4 years and that place is just hateful. We’re white but we experienced bigotry as well, just for not being from there. The racial tension was very strong and it was one of the reasons we got out as soon as we could. Terrible place to live. I am so sorry for his family. It is very uncommon for black men to commit suicide. I know it’s possible, but it’s much easier for me to believe that someone else did this to him. My brother was harassed and assaulted on separate occasions, just for having the wrong hairstyle. Teenagers get drunk and cruise around looking for trouble. They will throw a bottle at anyone they see who doesn’t fit the mold. I know there is racism both ways in Greenwood. Grand Blvd especially is a constant reminder of the days of slavery. It’s impossible to drive through there and not feel the old south.
