“She Announced Her Suicide Via Facebook”

And not one of her over 1,000 Facebook friends reached out to her to help.

Forty-two year-old Simone Back announced her intention to commit suicide in a status update on her Facebook page.

According to the Daily Mail, Back, who committed suicide on Christmas Day, wrote in her Facebook status, “Took all my pills be dead soon bye-bye everyone.”

What followed was a series of callous posts from some of Back’s Facebook friends “Some of the Facebook friends posted messages calling her a liar and one said it was ‘her choice’.

Seventeen hours later, police broke down the door of Back’s flat on Montague Street, in Brighton, and found her dead.

Back’s mother told the Daily Mail that none of her daughter’s online friends attempted to help her in person.

Back is not the first to announce her intention to commit suicide via Facebook. In 2010, a Rutgers University student, Tyler Clementi, who posted a status update on Facebook that read “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry” and his body was found soon after in the Hudson River.

Are all of your Facebook contacts really friends?

  1. “Are all of your Facebook contacts really friends?”

No Ms. Bell – Facebook “friends” aren’t really your true friends even if they send you cutesy messages and tell you how much they “love” you.

    1. They are merely virtual “acquaintences” but the relationships aren’t REAL or deep. Unless you start up affairs and such.

  3. It’s entirely possible that most of her friends never saw her suicide posting. if she had over a thousand friends they didn’t see dat shit….

      4. Ashanti,
There are a lot of other explanations for her death than that the world has grown cold, dark and indifferent as the result of social networking.

If this woman was mentally ill and had burned her bridges with friends who lived near by, I can understand no one jumping to her rescue. As tragic as the result of this incident is, I don’t think it is fair to blame all of her friends.

  5. Maybe Facebook should make things a bit easier and quicker and more straight forward in ways to get help for their users. Maybe then the death of Ms Simone Back may bring about less suffering for others.

  6. SMH @ “no one personally helped”, as if they are supposed to arrive at the door and remove the pills from her hands. GTFOH
90% percent of facebook users have no idea where their on-line friends live hell or who they actually are in some cases.
Most friends probably blocked her, a constant stream of drama-filled posts long before this tragic day, they prbly thought: “OH FUCK THIS” I’m tired of this drama driven bitch. So they IGNORED her.

    1. Maybe none of her friends were local. Maybe none of them logged on in time. Sad times we live in. but i aint killin myself i don’t care how dark it gets.

    2. I think it’s very probable that her close friends did not see the post in time, although I would hope that if I did something like this casual acquaintances would call 911..

Lastly, this does not seem like a cry for help anymore than the poor Rutger’s student ‘jumping off the GWB’. It’s pretty stark, and in past tense. ‘Took the pills going to die soon.” Maybe its just a public suicide note, because it does not seem like she intended for anyone to stop her.

So sad, to be so despondent and alone on Christmas. God rest her soul.

  7. You cannot blame those left behind for someone who takes their life. Even if she had been helped, it’s likely she’d try again. No one can help, really they have to fight their way through it like we all do. May she rest in peace.
