“The Queen Of Soul Has Cancer”

I woke up this morning to scores of emails and news channels reporting that Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, 68, has incurable pancreatic cancer.

A week after undergoing surgery for a mystery illness, the surgery which was labeled a success, but came under all kinds of mysterious circumstances due to medical reasons. And now it’s been revealed that Aretha’s been diagnosed with cancer.

Let us hope and pray the best for our legendary Queen of soul.

    1. Dang…so it’s safe to assume that she did not just have Gastric Bypass surgery…right? Prayers going up for Ms. Aretha.

    2. You got that right Keisha!!!

But how does she have this cancer and have Gastric Bypass surgery? They wouldn’t do that surgery with Pancreatic cancer would they???

      2. I hate to hear Aretha has pancreactic cancer. Just yesterday I read she had the gastric bypass surgery…Guess someone saw her losing weight and thoght it was gastric. No matter how rich you are if you don’t accidently catch pancreatic cancer in very early stages you are sure to die within 6 months. Its a painful death. I’ll pray she’s in that 5% that caught it early enough to survive.

@Daisy, my daughter’s cheerleading assistant coach has pancreatic cancer and we have watched her health deteriorate the last couple of months. She’s been living with it for a little over year. We are hoping she lasts until Christmas but it doesn’t look good. I cry everytime I see her. Life is a blessing.

  4. Sadly I watched my father die of Pancreatic Cancer. It is a slow and horrible death. It hurt to watch and I am more than sure its 1000 times worse for the patient. Depending on where/how much of the cancer is on the pancreas, they can attempt to remove part of it but if its too far gone then there won’t be much that can be done. She will be in the foulest of moods because of the constant pain. She will lose weight at a rapid weight. Best thing is to prolong the effects is to consume natural foods. But eventually when everything shuts down, she will basically starve to death.

  6. This is horrible! Panreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms anyone can be diagnosed with due the stage when it is diagnosed (usually stage 3 or 4). Definitely praying for her.

  10. Feb 2003 I lost my great-grandmother to this. She was 88 and in good health. She had just purchased a brand new car about a month or two before her diagnosis. She died a little over two weeks after they diagnosed her.
She went from being full of life to struggling to keep her bile down. R.I.P. Theo and :prayer: for Ms Franklin and her loved ones

I know her real friends and family feel the same way…Story has it that when I was a little baby full of colic I would cry and cry and cry…and while my parents were trying EVERYTHING…my dad put on his ‘Re records and…I shut up. Ma ‘Re goes off…and I would start again. So I have LITERALLY loved this woman from the crib!!!! My parents played her the entire summer of 1977…and I been in love with her every since!

  15. According to Roger Friedman @showbiz411, he claims Aretha does NOT have pancreatic cancer. At least not “confirmed” via hospital reps in Detroit. Of course that doesnt mean she didnt have pre-cancerous tissue removed from the stomach region. Just sayin.

    1. The family friend only confirmed that Aretha does in fact have cancer, however they did not specify what type of cancer.

    1. @ Ashanti – I hate to agree with you but that is so true. That cancer if not found early can spread rapidly throughout the body. My aunt died from it. She only lived 2 years after her diagnosis.

  16. I hate to say this, but Black women that are overweight are likely to develop cancers 3 to 4 times the rate of white women. The Queen of Soul has been overweight for several decades now. It’s a shame!!! I would hate for her to lose her life over this, however, it makes no damned since when you have money, cooks, trainers and people that have been telling her to lose weight and focus on her health issues at hand. I pray that she gets it together and get a new “lease on life”.–

  17. Unfortunately, she’ll die from this disease. There’s no cure and there’s no such thing as a pancreatic transplant. I’m not being nasty or pessimistic, just tellin the the truth. NO ONE SURVIVES pancreatic cancer. I wish her and her family the best.

    1. @Uncle Ed

Pancreatic cancer is almost always a death sentence. By the time it is diagnosed, it’s already too late. The survival rate is very small. I have heard of a few (very few) people who have survived it.

God does work miracles and I pray that he has one for The Queen, I will be praying for you, Aretha.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had surgery in Feb.09 for pancreatic cancer. She is still alive and on the Supreme Court. If caught early you do have a chance to survive.

I hope that Aretha beats the odds! She’s had a tough life, but through it all she’s been able to share her immaculate gift of song with the world.

  19. I didn’t have a feeling about this when the blogs reported that she had cancelled her concerts. NOONE cancels concerts for gastric bypass because many performance contracts give almost no room for cancellations. It usually HAS to be SERIOUS illness because there is tons of money at stake.

Of all of the people that this should’ve happened to, Ms. Franklin IS NOT one of them. I’d like to know which stage she’s in, the Enquirer is saying she has six months, and I suspect that someone at the hospital is leaking information about her health. I can’t WAIT until someone sues the hospitals for leaking medical information.

    1. It sounds like doctors performed the Whipple procedure. It’s a MAJOR surgery and the doctor needs to be very experienced or things can go left very quickly. I’m scared for two reasons: Surgery at any age is dangerous, but at 68, I’d be very leary. Pancreatic cancer is so painful and will turn you into an evil person due to the pain.

This is too much during the holidays. She just has to pull through this, she’s such an inspiration!

  21. Man who DOESN’T have cancer? I’ll be glad when these muhfuggas get tired of playing games with us little human puppets and turn the cancer switch off. My ladie’s best friend was seemingly the picture of health. Super-health nut badass sista with no unhealthy habits. By the time she got symptoms enough to have herself checked out, she had cancer of the uterus that somehow spread to her brain. Did 6 months of chemo and seemed to be fine until a month ago when she suddenly blacked out from brain-swelling. She’s stable now, but can no longer see out of her right eye.

Cancer is the fuckin scourge of humanity, man. Fuck what the FDA or any of these so-called organizations say. They simply represent the arrogance of mankind, thinking he’s got everything figured out. Live life to the fullest, and just do whatchu wanna do in moderation – that’s my motto to the grave. So if a nigga wanna get a lapdance and some bombass head while I’m chewin on a pork chop and throwin back some bombay sapphire and some muhfuggin James Brown bouncin off the walls.. I’ma do that shit once in a while. Cuz while Mr./Mrs. Perfect come up with sudden cancer at 40, George Burns is smokin at 90 and gettin daily handjobs from young models
