“Baby Born With Massive Head Swelling”

Neurosurgeons at a hospital in San Antonio, Texas are fighting to save the life of an 11-month old baby, born with a rare condition that has caused his head to swell more than twice the normal size.

“Baby Klaus,” as his parents and local media are calling him, was born with hydrocephalus, a build-up of excess fluid in the brain that has caused his head to swell to more than 130% larger than a typical newborn’s head.

After several doctors near their home in west Texas refused to operate or told them that their baby would die soon, the stricken baby’s parents, who identified themselves as Klaus Sr. and Beatrice, found a hopeful savior in Dr. David Jimenez, the chairmen of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Jimenez and his staff inserted a tube in the baby’s head to drain the fluid and relieve the pressure, and the child’s head is already about a foot smaller than it was when his parents brought him in about two weeks ago, San Antonio’s KENS5-TV reported.

Still, doctors and hydrocephalus experts said Baby Klaus’s had a particular severe case and that progress would be slow.

Known to doctors as “water on the brain,” hydrocephalus occurs in about 1 out of 500 babies born and can cause brain damage, if left untreated, the condition can be fatal.

  1. This is a sad story and the picture just breaks my heart.
maybe the parents couldnt get the treatment they needed for their son because of lack of health insurance..

    1. @mrs, “lack of health insurance”…or hard to get the medical treatment in their state.

but never the less, God is able and I pray little man recovers.

They are putting their baby through hell because of some hope in a miracle that is not going to happen.

    2. I agree w/Civil,
I think some things ought to move us to PRAY! And the only way to do that is to be effected by it.

So if the picture effects you or move you in any way, fall to your knees and ask God for a miracle for this baby.

  2. This child’s head did not swell up this big overnight. It would be interesting to know when they first started noticing his head swelling and what was done at that time – and if nothing was done at that time, why? There’s a lot of questions and alot more info needed.

    1. Not funny @anthony:
The sad thing is that he will very likely have a massive brain injury secondary to this swelling. If the doctors had started treating this baby before now (instead of just writing him off), the outcome might have been different.

    2. I’m not judging @Afrogirl but I’m a nurse & have seen a lot, so I understand people can be frightened or repulsed or feel the baby’s being exploited. Klaus is here with us & he’s fighting for his life-so trust me he’s worth the effort.

    5. We need to JUST CONTINUE TO PRAYER FOR THIS BABY.
This is really NOT the time for negative comments. No matter what people say or think it could have been your child… so a kind word and a sincere prayer is all there should be.

  6. Is this boy suffering?

Will he suffer for the rest of his life?

can he live a long and normal life while being blind, deaf and disfigured?

Can his brain develop normally if it’s not already damaged?

Can he spend his entire life going through one surgery after the other?

So many moral questions about this post.

Whatever they (the parents and doctors) decide, i hope the best for the little boy.

    *Peace.
