“The Black Man Would Rather Sell Drugs???”

Republican Party leaders in central Illinois are calling on their own candidate for state senate to step down following racist remarks he made at a candidate’s forum last week.

Al Reynolds, who is considered the Tea Party’s candidate in Illinois’ 52nd District, has been out of the spotlight since saying that African-American men preferred dealing drugs than going to college, because it is “easier.”

“I’ve been in the city and the dichotomy of the women and the men in the minorities, there is a difference in the fact that most minority women, either the single parent or coming from a poor neighborhood, are motivated more so than the minority men,” Reynolds said.

“And it’s a pretty good reason. Most of the women who are single parents have to find work to support their family. The minority men find it more lucrative to be able to sell drugs or other avenues rather than do education. It’s easier.”

“We need to provide ways that are more incentive, other than just sports avenues, for the men, for the minorities to want to go to college and get an education and better themselves before the women have to support them all.”

The crazy part about his statement is, Reynolds was speaking at an event sponsored by the NAACP.

  1. For years, I have read (in both the mainstream media & conservative media) how many non opportunities are afforded black men – causing a spiral decline in unemployment, drug arrests, and so forth.

What amazes me is that this candidate makes a relevant statement and what needs to be done about it, he is criticized for telling a truth: “We need to provide ways that are more incentive, other than just sports avenues, for the men for the minorities to want to go to college and get an education and better themselves before the women have to support them all.”

Why is it so objectionable to point out an actual truth and do something about it???

  2. Not all of them are willing to express it out loud because they fear the backlash. But this attitude is MUCH more prevalent among right wingers than they show outwardly. Particularly the Tea Partiers.

How else can one explain the continued presence of bigoted signs and t-shirts at Tea Party rallies?
These people are not shouted down by supposedly more tolerant attendees at the rallies. They are not escorted away from the rallies by security personnel.
They are allowed to remain at the rallies because most of the people there subscribe to the bigotry, but don’t have the nerve to say it aloud.

Blacks belonged to the republican party for a long time. We only migrated to the democratic party after the voting rights act was signed. The reason Condoleeza Rice is a republican is because blacks weren’t allowed to join the democratic party. Her father wasn’t allowed to become a democrat, so he joined the republican party. They’ve come a long way and there are times that I feel that they take the african american vote for granted, but if I ever decide to leave the democratic party, I will become an independent.

and it would be wise to refrain from using Condoleezza Rice as an expert reference regarding racial issues…you’ll recall that she is the same learned republican African American standard bearer who also said that although she grew up in 1960s Birmingham, Alabama (and even claimed to know the four little girls killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing) that she had NEVER SEEN OR BEEN THE VICTIM OF ANY RACIAL DISCRIMINATION.

The part that is offensive is that he just peels off maybe one layer of the problem and acts as though he’s solved everything. I don’t know how many people would say “I sold drugs because it was easy!” No, they sell drugs for the money and because they feel like they have know other option. Then he acts like socioeconomics play no role what so ever in the fact that more black men aren’t going to college. Since the tax bracket you live in determines the kind of education your going to get, why is he shocked that poor blacks aren’t going to college. If he really cared about this problem he would have looked deeper into it than just demeaning the entire situation into black men are too lazy.

Black folk can’t handle the truth. If used the same amount of energy that we put into playing the race card and reinvested it into ourselves we’e be much better off. But no, we choose to stay stuck going in circles and blaming everybody else when in reality we need to take responsibility for our shortcomings and deal with them head on.

Picking up a book is much easier, the minority men who do it, do it because it is an avenue for quick money and that is all they know. Selling drugs is not an easy thing to do because it is a hustle within itself. There is too much money in the drug game and that is why minorities do it because of the millions of dollars you can make from the hustle of drugs. It becomes a hustle that pays very well and an avenue for thousands of dollars.

  12. No, read the statement again. Selling drugs is a very hard thing to do. Picking up a book is easier than drug dealing, not the other way around. The drug game is a very lucrative business that has college educated men smuggling drugs because they can make millions of dollars from the trade.

Dumb black women cosigning this idiots rant. Minorities sell drugs because they can make alot of money from drug dealing. Picking up a book is fine but a drug dealer can make about 50 million dollars in one day from smuggling drugs. Drugs are a lucrative business and drug dealers are not stupid men, many drug smugglers are college educated men. White men are the biggest drug runners and weapons dealers in the world. Its not blacks who began the crack and cocaine epidemic in America, it was white men, like CIA operative Oliver North who pushed drugs into the inner cities and they did it because they could make lots of money. Drug dealing and drug smuggling is not an easy job to do, it is a very dangerous activity and you have to be very smart in order to evade the FBI.

I don’t think that its racist to state his opinion. This guy like many other white men are simply ignorant to the communities that are outside of their safe havens. I think it’s reaching to say that ALL minority men find it easier peddling drugs than picking up a book because thats just untrue. Look at the circumstances surrounding the young men of a poverty stricken neighborhood. There is no motivation or positive influence to instill the benefits of education. The lure of making a quick buck slinging dope would entice Mother Theresa if she were placed in this environment, so its quite likely that impressionable young men would also be drawn in.

The problem with his statements is this: it may have some very strong truths to it, Lord knows I look at some of our young black men and wonder how on earth they missed the memo that having an education is the key to a successful future not ridden with criminal records and jail time…however, people fail to understand exactly WHY so many black men turn to this lifestyle. Yes, I agree that there needs to be a desire to LEARN instead of just ‘playing ball’. But what has society done in the past 50 years or so to break the black man’s spirit? The issue is a lot deeper than what meets the eye…

Case and point.., young black college male gunned down last week by cop. and the cops trying to justify that shit. so if they are not finding one way to kill our black males, they’re finding another.

When you can read data you don’t have to go to the hood!P.S I have to be honest if he said the honest to God about black women I would have been upset, but he didn’t so I will stick to the script. Get it together black men, stop supporting coons like Rick R, waka floka, soulja boy..giving black men a bad rep globaly, and the black entertainers with good reps, they dress them like girls, and the other ones with good reps they turn them into weaklings running from their race and portray them with white women. So start taking responsibility and stop letting the white man portray who you are, stop supporting coon artist, stopp dressing in sagging pants. Take the G off of sagging and what does it spell backwards. Stop falling for the o-ke-doke and get back to being strong black men. In these conversations or debates institutional racism is never addressed. I know it’s bad out here and I do apologize. I’m not making excuses but I think it’s an issue of exposure. If there aren’t any positive black men where you are doesn’t mean there aren’t any positive black men anywhere. Admitting that the educated positive black men does in fact exist is a start.

      4. Zion, these are interesting debates but it always end in arguments and accusations. Black women want and need black men to do and be better, true. Black men need to create their own industry if not willing to work for someone else, true. Black men also need to create and support Africentric education systems if they’re not willing to matriculate into the Eurocentric education system, true. But, to say that “all” black men are uneducated and disrespectful is just not true. Those blanket statements are dangerous and doesn’t make the journey easy for the black men that are out here doing something with ourselves. I’m out, be safe.

      5. Bump all the “black love” BS.

Most black men have this mentality. Whether its easy to deal or to go to school is irrelevant!! The fact is plain and simple one path is illegal, while the other is not.
Black men need to make better choices, and black women need to make better choices when choosing partners!
I am like Tina “whats love got to do with it!”
Speaking the truth about our culture and its woes is what is going to get the AA community to heal, NOT demonizing someone who spoke the truth because they just happen to be white.
Go check out your stats on black women in college who graduate in comparison to black men! Hellloooo.
The man didn’t have to talk about any other race except the black one! The NAACP deals with blacks, not whites, latino’s etc. Niccas wake up!

Jus saying~ Yeah I am in College getting my masters and a black woman that wants a hard working, positive, legal black man!
        What Up?

  25. I didn’t find his statements all that racist. He didn’t say ALL black men or minorities. There was no blanket statement there. But he did make a sort of generalization. However I wasn’t insulted. He said what alot of people including blacks are thinking. And to a large degree, he’s right. Black men need to start picking up a book or three and learn to read more than a copy of Jet, XXL or The Source. You can’t even function in the world today without some kind of advanced degree. Is it any wonder everyone else in the world including Africans are prospering and benefiting from having a college degree. Indians are some of the poorest people in the world and they have enough sense to go to college and make more money than black americans who live only blocks away from the same universities.

  26. LOL @ some of the comments.
Multi-degreed Black man here. Aside from what is rather a broad generalization, this guy is absolutely correct. What is more important here is that it doesn’t matter whether he is right or wrong — but that this perception among all walks of ethnicities exists – and you won’t change the reality until you change their perception.

    1. For example, Tiger Woods just recently bought a 54 million dollar home. Technically, he can buy whatever he wants because he has the money to do so, but just because you can does not mean you should. He is a single man now, and a nice condo what have suited him just fine. He could have taken that money and started in his old n.hood first and started making changes. Most black n.hoods do not have libraries. P. Diddy build one. You have to hire people to run the library, guess what you just created jobs. Black n.hoods do not have health grocery stores, Chad Ochocinco, build some. Stop chasing women and build some. Giving money to charities is find, but like 2PAC said, we all know that money does not make it to the ghetto. Actually, going into the n.hoods will make more of a difference. Following the plan I just laid out will start to make a difference. Put private school curriculum into public schools for blacks. Dont pay everyones rent in the projects like “Baby” did, build homes for the less fortunate and give them the opportunity to become educated to maintain the home you have just built for them. This is how we can make changes and not have to worry about racist whites and their shallow comments.

      1. I absolutely understand what you are saying, to whom much is given much is expected/required. I am not a fan of Tiger Woods, but He does give a way hundreds of millions of dollars a year. He has his own foundation that gives grants ages 8-18 and he also has a learning center for children etc. I personally see nothing wrong with him living in whatever type of house he chooses when he is a giver of his fortune just like Diddy. I have heard very little about Beyonce and Jay Z’s charity work. I do agree with you though, many celebs should help instead of bragging about their fortunes.

  28. Who says you have to go to college to make something out of yourself. I followed that path, but I know quite a lot of black men who didn’t and still have lucrative careers. They are truck drivers, plumbers, electricians, computer tecks, whom I have met and they make 6 figures.I know a 38 yr old black man who started at the bottom of his company and learned everything and is now one of it’s top managers, he is currently going to school simply to prove to people that he always had what it takes. Learning a trade could be just as lucrative for those who aren’t into college.

This (al reynolds) man was asked a question, he answered it with some facts, but no solutions.

  29. IT IS EASIER TO SELL DRUGS THAN TO GET IN COLLEGE BECAUSE COLLEGE IS SO FUKKEN EXPENSIVE!!!

BUT HE IS IGNORANT AND RACIST FOR STEREOTYPING THE AFRICAN AMERICANS BECAUSE THERE ARE MEN, WOMEN , WHITES, BLACKS,MEXICANS,AND ASIANS GETTING BUSTED EVERYDAY FOR THIS MESS

THIS NOT AN ISSUE OF RACE IT’S AN ISSUE OF THE WAR ON DRUGS, WHEN THE ECONOMY GOES DOWN THE CRIME GOES UP!

    1. True dat! The average college graduate will be $100,000 in debt before enterin’ the work force…And considerin’ this long term recession and its’ adverse effect on the employment market, most college students will be hard pressed to find suitable employment to pay back said debt.

      WELCOME TO THE NEW NORMAL!

  30. Black bitter female brigade talking a whole lot of mess. No black man is pissed at anything but the hypocrisy of America. America is built on the all mighty dollar. Drugs are just another part of our system. What this guy fails to tell you is that America looks the other way with Afghanistan in its Opium trade. Afghanistan ships tons of cocaine to Europe and America looks the other way. In America they privatize prisons for slave workfare. Banks sell you Sub prime loans to cheat you out of money. This guy is missing the point. This is the problem with white men, they are myopic. Kids need other avenues for real opportunities, not everyone is built for college so their needs to be low income jobs for the labor force. There needs to be more opportunities for these kids outside of their box. recreational and academic In many black schools they don’t even have enough text books for the kids to read or write with. Also parents need to get involved because black boys on the block have a mother or father who doesn’t care about them. This isnt a black men problem this is a community and culture problem because these boys are your kids. It would only be dumb ignorant black women getting angry at black men on these boards who have jobs and have homes. Its your kids and sons that are failing but some of you idiots don’t see that, you only see it as black men. Sadly this is the problem.
