“Tyler Perry Opens Up About Sexual Abuse”

Tyler Perry spoke candid to Oprah Winfrey yesterday, about the sexual abuse he endured at an early age.

The very popular and prominent stage playwright, actor, director and producer said, he suffered sexual abuse at the hands of various adults.

Though they’re close friends, Oprah says she never realized how brutal Tyler’s childhood really was. Oprah asked Tyler to describe his childhood years and he said: “It was a living hell!”

To endure the violent beatings, shouting and name-calling, Tyler says he used his imagination to escape.

“I could go to this park [in my mind] that my mother and my aunt had taken me to. … I’m there in this park running and playing, and it was such a good day,” he says. “So, every time somebody was doing something to me that was horrible, that was awful, I could go to this park in my mind until it was over.”

    1. It must have been hard for him to trust people growing up. I’m glad he is speaking about it, not only does it cleanses the soul but it also helps other victims get the courage to speak out againgst their molesters… however who he prefers to have sex with should be private. But hey if he opens up about it I am all ears.

    2. @CB: I also think that this is his way of one day admiting that he is gay and coming out and we can all say it was because of him being molested. MmHm.

Of all the journalists and media personalities out there, why Oprah?
I’m not “hating”, just merely baffled.

    1. @CB: Oprah sets a “medium” type forum for people to tell thier story, there is no judgement and since Oprah is highly repected, there is usually no back- lash.. everyone takes O seriously! She’s just great at what she does

    2. @CB: unlike Tyra, who just wants to make you cry and feel bad about yourself.. or monique, who doesnt ever talk about REAL issues.. who else, Ellen.. Ellen is a comedian, no one would remember a serious issue coming from her direction.. and pleeaassseeee on wendy williams- lol

    3. @CB, Yvonne & Nicole: I don’t know why these established celebrities (MoNique, Halle) that work with her feel the need to tell O that kind of business.

My point is that she’s no doctor (except maybe of media), most of her viewers are not qualified to help.

I’m very sorry for anyone who has to endure abuse but people need to get help from a licensed professional or join a support group.

I mean, don’t everybody complain that celebrities always promote things kids and youth shouldn’t see or do? Maybe Eddie Long’s situation made him come out about it now… INFORM THE MASSES TYLER.

2:She pulled me on top of her. So my first sexual experience was with a woman, that was it.
I feel very bad for Tyler.. I hope one day he can heal from this.. its always so hard for a man to admit that he was molested / penatrated by another man… that is apparently what happend, if you read between the lines..just horrible story for any child- I hope Tyler has some sort of organization to help protect children from these types of monsters!

Otherwise, it all sounds like a tidbit from the NEXT movie he’s planning. He knows no one can discredit his claims because first of all he didn’t name a real person or persons (speaking only in general terms) and he knows because of that, no one can discredit him. All this stuff sounds crazy to me. You don’t know who to believe.

  7. Ok my problem is that he is telling us this now for what? All these blogs have been calling him gay for years and he never said a word. Now he has a new film coming out and now he is being vocal about what he went through. Now I am not saying that he is not or was not molested, I am saying that his timing is like everyone else. Right in time for a new album or a new movie. So sad that you use a situation to sell something.

    1. Damn, I didn’t know there had to be a limit on how many people could molest you to make the story plausible.

@Nicole: listen, whether he’s promoting a movie or not, I give him kudos for speaking up about it. At LEAST him speaking up will give others the courage to do so, because like it’s been said before it gets swept under the rug too many times in our community. Let’s not forget that Tyler has always said that he was abused at some point in his life, he just never went into detail. So this isn’t a “new” revelation, just filling in some blanks.

Now, this does not excuse some of the BS he pushes like Meet the Browns or House of Payne, but just because he says he was molested by four people doesn’t mean it’s not true.

      Like

  8. I am bewildered by his story. He was molested by four different people. WTF! Where were his parents? Why didn’t he tell anyone when he was a child? I watched him on Oprah and I got the feeling that his father suspected he was gay and tried to beat it out of him. His father wanted him to change tires and do “manly” things but all Tyler wanted to do was read and draw. His daddy knew Tyler had a feminine nature. Opening up about this issue as an adult is courageous, but we have to teach our children to speak on it when it happens so that the abuse doesn’t continue and the molesters can be dealt with.

What is his new movie about? Sexual abuse? Probably. Most likely.

TP is at an age now where he can bring charges up against the mofos who raped him, and have the bitch prosecuted for kidnap too because what if he DIDN’T dig in her pussy and get the key? Instead, he dug in there and got it. If his ass was scared, fuck the key and the door, he’d have done a tuck and dive out a motherfucking window to get away from a bitch. I seriously doubt someone would come on tv and lie about being molested. No matter what his reasons are Molestation is a serious accusation! It is up there with murder & rape. You are killing their soul and robbing them of their innocence. And didn’t he say he was 10@ the time? More than 20 years ago so he probably got a few things mixed up but the feeling of abuse is still there. That will haunt him forever.

  10. Tyler is doing two things by coming out with his sexual abuse at this time. 1) publicity for his new movie 2) laying down the foundation for when he professes his homosexuality. People won’t be so surprised. I have a big feeling he’ll be a big advocate for gay rights, and he’ll have everyone in hollywood back him up.

    1. Tamala, I do believe O like a lot of these “powerful media types” have hidden agenda’s. however you will not be able to fool everyone, as Bob Marley sang “you can fool some of the people sometimes, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.

I do believe TP is telling the truth, incest is very prevalent in our culture, the reality is a child is usually victimized sexually by multiple predators in the family and community. the shame and stigma attached to it, is what leads many to keep those dark secrets, and suffer in silence or wait until adulthood when they feel safe enough to reveal the trauma they faced as children, its a harrowing journey that few ever heal from. this is why there is so much turmoil in our communities, for black men its particularly hard, given the homophobia in our culture and to have their sexuality questioned. incest is vicious cycle often the perpetrators themselves were victimized and “choose” to victimize others. the show in November hopefully and with the eddie long scandal will open the flood gates and allow for more black men to come forward. its long past the time for this epidemic to be exposed and eradicated, so we can heal and move on as a people. TP doesn’t need to use a movie to come forward with a made up story about incest, given how hateful and homophobic our culture is towards those who choose same sex unions. I hope this will be the catalyst for healing on a massive scale. predators need to know they will be exposed, hunted down and taken off the planet. they cannot be rehabilitated and should be killed off to prevent them from preying on other children.

CHILDREN WHO ARE MOLESTED, DO NOT TELL ANYONE!!
Once a person is molested as a child, that person wears a “V” FOR VICTIM on their foreheads, where a PREDATOR can easily see it “BLOOD IN THE WATER,” AS Tyler SAID.
I WAS MOLESTED BY A TEACHER, babysitter, landlord, camp conselor….THESE PREDATORS SAW/RECOGNIZED MY “V!”
Tylor was very nervous telling this story, so what if he said his first sex was with a man…then said his first sex was with a woman….actually that makes sense! THE FIRST TIME WITH EACH GENDER…GET IT?!

I hope that you don’t have nor ever will have children because if one came to you and told you that this happened to them, you would call them a liar.

It is estimated that one out of every three to four girls and one out of every six boys are molested by age 18.

The FBI reports that the National Institute for Mental Health found that only 1% to 10% of victims ever tell that they were abused. Boys report far less than girls.

•The average child molester will molest fifty girls before being caught and convicted.

•A child molester that seeks out boys will molest 150 boys before being caught and convicted and he will commit at least 280 sexual crimes in his lifetime.

•The standard pedophile will commit 117 sexual crimes in their lifetime.

•Most sexual abuse happens between the ages of 7 and 13.

•There are over 491,720 registered sex offenders in the United States.

•80,000 to 100,000 of the above offenders are missing.

•Molesters known by the family or victim are the most common abusers. The “Acquaintance Molester” accounts for 70-90% of reported cases.

It is not so surprising that multiple people have molested Tyler. Predators know when children are unprotected and sniff them out very easily.

Its real sad in this country that a molester can be free and his victims suffer a lifetime of pain – all molesters/rapists/and or anyone involved in any sex crime should be castrated and woman offenders should be neutered like a cat – remove they ovaries and cut off the clit – this is beyond sad and to those people belittling it like it ain’t no big deal how would you feel if he was a girl … we always ready to cry foul if its a girl but we act like its fair play for every teacher, clergy or relative to feel up our sons… disgusting…. and black families are NOTORIOUS for turning a blind eye to abuse – had a friend who was raped by her brother for years – her mother did nothing and eventually alienated the daughter from the family for being a liar – the brother rapist was recently arrested for impregnating his 12 year old daughter – molesters don’t stop they just do it to somebody else… I’m so disgusted… Eddie Long and the rest of them need to be stoned old testament style.

They just don’t want to hear it.

The fathers won’t go against the offending family members either.

Now if it were a teacher, stranger, or someone that Mom and Dad does not like, that’s when the predators are confronted, for the most part.

Not every single detail of your very private life needs to be aired on television or any media for that matter. If this really happened, shouldn’t he be in therapy to deal with the aftermath? Because evidently he is still coming to terms with it, if he has to tell his business on national television. Who is this helping exactly? All these celebrities come out with their horrible child hood abuse stories, but are any of them working with abused children? 25. Tyler’s story and the comments on this post are very sad but encouraging to other abused children & adults. It is so easier to believe a young girl who has been sexually abused than young boy who admits abuse. Uusual response is be a man, stop lying or how could you let another man touch you or you must be gay! Which is why most boys keep quiet about it but later affects them in a major way. …Something is Killing Tate comes to mind its a great movie about a black man trying to overcome his abuse as a young boy. It is worth watching.

  26. And for those who have experienced such bad things as a child.. Please know that Love conquers all. Love for yourself and God will give you more strength & courage to face yourself in the mirror & believe ‘I am a human being I deserve happiness and love’.
And parents please be less trusting of others caring for your child while you’re away. May that be a Reverend, teacher, the day care lady, friendly next door neighbor, trusted friend or loving relative. And please listen closely to your children they are always trying to tell you something. Intentional or unintentional there is always a sign something is not right. Don’t be afraid to be a nag and ask them how their day went. Please be that trusting adult they can come to about their problems. Be openminded and less judgemental. What we teach them today is what they will incorporate later in their lives.

  27. I can’t even express how embarrassed and ashamed I am for those of you on this thread making light of this situation. I won’t even remind any of you about the NUMEROUS times, I have heard Tyler in an interview, allude to his childhood abuse. All I want to say is, bless those of you who have suffered abuse, or given abuse because of the cycle of abuse. It’s a sad situation, and I hope our community finds the key to breaking it. thx!

  28. Parents need to be diligent watching their kids. The boogeyman is usually not a stranger. It’s your friend.

It took a lot of courage for Tyler to tell the truth of his life in front of the world. I commend him. That had to have been hard, NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY HE’S MADE.

      1. GTFOH: I agree with you Adam,
        Tyler Perry is an opportunist!
He waits until his movie is about to drop to tell this story.

I don’t get how you idiots could be so supportive of Tyler perry when he says he was molested but then literally attack Eddie Longs abuse victims.

Tyler Perry is an idiot. I do believe he was molested and i think thats why he hates black men so much and he doesn’t know what it means to be decent. No decent man would ever promote the kinds of negative images he promotes in his film.

He is just laying the ground work to tell the world that he is gay. But surprise only fat black church women thought he was straight to begin with.
