But that’s nothing new…U.S. president Barack Obama’s statements backing the construction of a Muslim mosque near the site of the World Trade Center disaster is being met with outrage from those who oppose the planned project.
At a dinner Friday celebrating the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Mr. Obama said Muslims have a right, as a matter of religious freedom, to build a religious center near Ground Zero. “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” he said to applause. Read more…
While Muslim leaders praised Mr. Obama’s support of the proposed NYC mosque, proponents picked up on Obama’s lack of sensitivity for the families of the 3,000 victims of September 11.
Rev. Gregory S. Whelton, a pastor at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Sheboygan, said he believes Muslims have the right to build mosques anywhere, but he feels Ground Zero should be off-limits because of the circumstances of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
“To do it in light of what has happened, I’m not sure I would agree with that,” he said. “But as far as their right to do it, absolutely.”

Let them build the Mosque there–damn! It ain’t even at ground zero (its a few blocks away)!
What happened to freedom of religion and the freedom to worship as one chooses????

In this country where we are…atleast suppose to have religious freedom…I can’t argue with that.
In one of my classes we always spoke about the KKK having marches in minority neighborhoods or suburbs…. They do have a RIGHT by the constitution to do it…we don’t have to like it…but hey….

but still the “extremists” will claim this as a victory you all know that my thing is why do they not want to build it anywhere else??? why is this place SO SIGNIFICANT for them to build upon wake up people you would bring a baby to an abortion clinic unless you were trying to draw upon people’s emotions

He makes a pretty good point about the right to religious freedom. Anyway, it is ridiculous to blame an entire religion for the acts of a few crazy extremists.

ARE YOU FLUCKING SERIOUS??????????????
So America should disregard their whole flucking constitution to please a few unhappy BIGOTS???
This is AMERICA and the last time I checked, there was freedom of religion…no matter what or who you worship. How can you fight a war trying to impose the idea of freedom in other countries when freedom isn’t defended here??? And people are picketing mosques all over the country..not just this one. I saw a video of people with signs saying “You and Allah get the hell out of our country”. Burning Qu’rans on church lawns. People make me SICK. So called “Christians”. Ask yourself What Would Jesus Do?

he said he wasn’t going to speak on the wisdom behind the decision to build it there. it didn’t support or stand against it. he simply said they have a right to build it. and they do. now whether the city will grant them the permits and such needed, that’s something different.
folks up this guys ass just because. it reminds of not being liked at all so no matter what you do, it’s wrong.

In essence they are prohibiting them from exercising their religion. I would argue that freedom of religion includes being able to assemble and worship. These people are in fact hindering that right. And I speak not only of the proposed project in NYC, but in other states such as CA, PA, AL and a host of others.

First of all the PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA DID NOT BACK the MOSQUE he backed the right for them to build which is what any president with intelligence would do since he has sworn to uphold the constitution.
Secondly there are already TWO FUNCTIONING MOSQUES in the vicinity of ground zero already but are always filled to capacity which is why the plans for expansion.
Thirdly Muslims go AND PRAY AT GROUND ZERO every year to pray for their loved ones, MUSLIM AMERICANS who were killed by the extremist as well.
Fourthly SIXTY TWO Muslims Americans (Estimated maybe more maybe less) died on September 11, 2001. They were EMT/ Fire Fighters and ordinary people trying to make a living for their families.
Finally this is getting ridiculous, the biggest purveyor of terrorism against BROWN people have historically been of another popular religion. No religion is clear of psychotic people who are willing to use religion to support their crazy ideology……The Crusades, Slavery, The Inquisition the Salem Witch Hunt, The Massacre of the Native Americans the list goes on and on. People really need to educate themselves and stop spotting this Fox News Drivel, there are Billions of Muslims around the world and Millions of them in America….we ain’t going anywhere. The best hope THIS COUNTRY HAS AGAINST DEFEATING EXTREMIST WHO CLAIM ISLAM AS THEIR RELIGION IS TO ADVANCE AND SUPPORT MAINSTREAM ISLAM WHICH CALLS FOR INTERFAITH DIALOGUE WITH OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS FROM THE ABRAHAMIC FAITHS AND RESPECT OF THE WESTERN FREEDOMS THAT WE SO ENJOY.
And on that note I’m peacing out because I’m fasting and I would hate to break my fast behind what some idiot behind a keyboard is saying…
Ramadan Mubarak…Peace, Shalom, Salaam…..

Hello All. Starr, excellent, excellent point about the KKK, the oldest domestic terrorist organization in America. Because of the constitution, no one ever outlawed them. How did Chris Rock put it: As long as it’s all white it’s alright.

as a Muslim that resides in NYC that has to hear about this day in and day out, I will say this…
What many fail to forget is, ISLAM did NOT attack the world trade center, some people that happen to call themselves Muslims did. The two are NOT the same. Secondly, that some of the WORST crimes against humanity have been committed in the name of Christianity, eg, the Holocaust, The Trans Atlantic Slave trade and I could go on and on. But the point I am making is that it would be more than ridiculous for a black person or a Jew to boycott churches based on the actions of a few that claim that religion.
At the end of the day, whether people want to acknowledge it or not, Islam is the biggest worldwide religion, but just like soccer (the biggest worldwide sport) just doesn’t have a huge following here in America. All opposing this does is further perpetuates ignorance and hatred among different groups of people.
My million dollar question is, who/what states what is appropriate in regards to distance from ground zero? It is not on the same street, people need to google map the location to see it and I am sure most would feel foolish once they see the location. I guess you could say it’s in the vicinity but you could easily get to ground zero and NEVER even pass this mosque if you so chose.
Anyway, It’s Ramadan and I’m fasting so let me get back to my peace place!

I agree with Obama. Why should one religion be blamed for the actions of a handful of lunatics. I have Muslim friends who were just as horrified by 9/11 as everyone else. There are crazies in every religion, not just Islam.

I guess I can speak on this… I was there for 9/11 and thankfully I was not injured and I was able to get home safely unlike a lot of other people that were there that day…
With that said I am w/ the majority of you all. I say let them build what they want, muslims are already in that area practicing their religion now so what’s the big deal. I remember going down there a few years back and up in some of those old buildings where bootleg merchandise was being sold u could look in the other rooms where muslims would go and pray throughout the day. It did not bother me at all. There will be no place for those individuals that are called “extreme muslims”….. We need to get our head out of the clouds and let everyone enjoy the rights that were set fourth by our founding fathers….
