As I was listening to the news this morning, one of all the heartbreaking and uplifting stories coming out of quake-hit country, and the most talked about is the lack of looting even in the hardest hit areas.
The media is apparently searching for images of looting among the devastation and are shocked to find, there is none.
Contrast to the media coverage of the widespread looting in post-Katrina New Orleans that was split down racial lines. The media’s coverage of the looting in New Orleans was shamefully biased.
White looters were described as “recovering” basic items necessary for survival — such as bottled water and detergent, while blacks were portrayed as looters scavenging for beer and cigarettes.
While the media never tires of reporting on the looting, pillaging and rapes that continue to plague the Haitian people.
But in Japan, where people generally look out for one another, the media is reduced to settling for images of “solidarity” among the Japanese people. “Perhaps even more impressive than Japan’s technological power is its social strength…” writes a British reporter. “This is quite unusual among human cultures,” he adds.
It’s also quite unusual for the media to notice.

The Jap government is on a different level than over here in America. I worked there for a while and they watch you like a hawk. You can’t do nothing. If they loot, they will be found and delt with. The government don’t play that over there.

I’m *praying* For Japan…the earthquake moved their coast 8 feet and shifted the earth’s axis. Now the nuclear reactors are experiencing meltdowns. So sad.

About the reactors…
So far, there isn’t too much concern, they are holding up better than expected.
Apparently, it wasn’t the earthquake and aftershocks that caused problems; so there is no serious structural damage to the plants; it was the flooding from the tsumani.
All that water messed with the generators used to keep everything cooled down. Now they’re using that same sea water to keep things from overheating and going Chernobyl.
Even though the US won’t really be affected by a nuclear meltdown in Japan, I hope everything continues to hold for them.

It always pissed me off when that is what the media chooses to focus on in any situation. In wake of major natural disasters such as Japan, Haiti, etc. people are simply surviving. Those same reporters would do the same if faced with that.

I knew Rezzie would be back sooner than later.
As someone stated at the beginning of the thread, there ain’t nothing to loot. Add to that fact most people are staying indoors to avoid any radiation from those nuclear plants.

Isn’t Japan the country where you aren’t allowed to spit or throw gum on the ground without getting in trouble? They believe in being honorable. But I can understand why people would fight for things in Katrina or Haiti especially when you don’t have a lot because that’s another thing Japan is a very rich country (US is too but we know the wealthy isn’t distributed evenly).
