Race Appropriation, or cultural appropriation is when someone else adopts a style from a race that is not his or her own. But that’s not the whole story, appropriation refers to a particular power dynamic in which members of a dominant culture take elements from a culture of people who have been systematically oppressed by that dominant group. It’s fine to take aspects of another culture but when it permeates the masses, there lies the problem.

Recently in an interview with the breakfast club Azalia Banks slammed Cardi B for trying to impersonate a black woman. Cardi B is among a group of white and Hispanic rappers who are heavily promoted by the media as acceptable crossover hip-hop artists. This is not sitting well with other celebrities.

In a recent interview with the Breakfast Club, Banks dissed Cardi by calling her an “illiterate, untalented rat” and a “caricature of a black woman,” then dismissed the rapper as a one-hit wonder and not influential at all.

Several other artist have imitated us in the past as well. You have Eminen, Vanilla Ice, Jon B, Miley Cyrus, Iggy Izalea and Bruno Mars just to name a few.

So what is so wrong with imitating black R&B artist, rappers and entertainers?

    1. Cardi B doesn’t have to be a role model. Millions of girls around the world are already living her former life. This whole issue is showing the world that girls, especially girls of color, must have options and resources or they will fall victim to surviving by any means.

      The gangs and strip clubs are preying on girls with broken homes and no options. Instagram is filled with girls with broken homes and no options waiting to catch a break.

  10. I don’t like Cardi B however, here Azalia is calling the kettle black. While bleaching all of her own blackness away. Yet sitting her ass up there using black women’s culture as a crutch and weapon to down someone. You dont like Cardi. Okay dont like her. But dont use the LIE that she is damaging black women’s culture as the reason or the rebuttal. What has Azalia Banks done for black women’s culture? Anything? Its not hard.     1. Azalia was asked a question. She answered it. And Cardi took offense too it and couldn’t hold her own. I agree that Azealia is bit off. But some of her issues have stemmed from being a super talented young lady, but not light enough ( reason for bleaching) for mainstream media and success.

    10. I don’t think Bruno Mars ever denied the fact that he imitated IN LIVING COLOR in that video. He cant..his video is imitated right down to the paint Cardi outfit the set. Even some of his moves is the opening of the show to the tee. That can never be denied. Is it race appropriation? I don’t this so.
