‘I’m happy the witch is dead’: Fresno State professor sparks outrage as she celebrates the death of Barbara Bush

She called her a “racist who raised a war criminal” and now she’s under fire for her tweet about the former first lady.

Randa Jarrar, who teaches in the English department at Fresno State, took to her twitter page last night and wrote a series of tweets condemning Bush, who died at the age of 92 after a battle with lung disease and congestive heart failure.

‘Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal. Fuck outta here with your nice words’.

The tweets generated controversy online, with many saying that her words against Bush were inappropriate.

Randa Jarrar is a hate-spewing psychopath, yet she remains gainfully employed at Fresno State.

Another user added: ‘If you’re a student in one of Randa Jarrar’s classes please do the right thing and boycott her until she is forced to resign. Who would want to learn English when she spews this vile crap?’

But that only fueled Jarrar’s rhetoric, and she continued to voice her opinion in several more tweets before eventually setting her account to private.

In one tweet, she said she couldn’t be fired because she has tenure, going so far as to tag the school’s president in the post.

The school has tried to distance itself from Jarrar, saying that her tweets were written as a ‘private citizen’ and they don’t reflect the university.

‘Professor Jarrar’s expressed personal views and commentary are obviously contrary to the core values of our University, which include respect and empathy for individuals with divergent points of view, and a sincere commitment to mutual understanding and progress,” he added.

‘On behalf of Fresno State, I extend my deepest condolences to the Bush family on the loss of our former First Lady, Barbara Bush’.

Jarrar, a Muslim, was born in Chicago but grew up in Kuwait and Egypt, before returning to the U.S. after the first Gulf War.

Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Salon.com, The Rumpus, the Utne Reader, The Oxford American.

She is the author of two books, the coming of age novel ‘A Map of Home’ and a story collection – ‘Him, Me, Muhammad Ali’.

  6. Sadly, much if not all of what she accuses the Bush family is true. Barbara might have been the “genteel”, kind, generous member of the family, but face it, that’s not saying all that much. Still, it’s tacky to take such glee in a death.

  10. She is referring to George W. Bush starting the fraudulent war with Iraq based on the lies about WMDs which killed over a million people including lots of innocent women and children. For that, many believe Bush should have been prosecuted as a war criminal. This professor’s comments might be harsh and cruel at such a time but she’s sadly on point.

    1. I believe that Bush Jr. may in fact be a war criminal. That said, this was over the line. You really shouldn’t speak ill of the dead. Especially when they haven’t even gone cold yet.

    2. So where to you think the chemical weapons in Syria came from? I think if you do a little homework you will find that many of those war stocks made their way into Syria, which the military intelligence on the ground at the time said would happen and verified, but no one wanted hear that over their crying wolf about the war in Iraq. The other reason we know that Saddam had the chemical weapons there was because under the Carter Administration those were given to him by us during his war with Iran.

        Well let me give you an example, when her son was criticized for Hurricane katrina remember that? Some of the worst things were happening in that superdome, people were being rapped, toilets were over flowed, the conditions were ratchet and this is what good ole Barbara said…. “And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway,” she said, “so this is working very well for them.” O_o Really.

      4. I remember Barbara Bush’s comment about the Katrina victims. It was incredibly insensitive and came from the mind of an old, white woman who has known nothing but privilege her entire life. I wasn’t surprised, but I’m thinking she grew from that???.

      6. Mrs. Bush herself would have said she had flaws and one of those was sometimes saying inappropriate things that could be misconstrued. She was, like most of us, a product of her upbringing. At the end of the day, however, I believe her strengths outweighed her flaws.

      7. The bad thing about this is people going overboard in their praise of Barbara Bush. She didn’t care about the underprivileged or dead soldiers. I don’t think we have to put people on a pedestal when they die. End of story.

  16. Ms. Bush was flawed. Her mothering might have played a part in hundreds of thousands of people being turned into worm food and trillions being added to our national debt but that doesn’t mean this women should berate her in death..she should’ve said it when the woman was alive.

  17. Professor Jarrar did speak the truth but the mistake was tweeting it out for the world to see. Her opinion of Mrs. Bush is insensitive and breaks a cardinal rule of ‘not speaking ill of the dead’, which is strike two. She should realize that anything that Trump uses to communicate his opinions with is probably a mistake. I hope the university doesn’t over react and fire this talented educator and that Prof. Jarrar retires her twitter account.

George Jr. lied to the world resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, not to mention crashing the economy. and of course the insider trading that he should have gone to jail for. the bush family in many ways was as crooked as the trumps, and she was part of that. she had her chances and she stayed, for the money like most of them.

  22. What hurts is that the professor spoke the truth. Anyone who’s followed the life of Barbara Bush (probably none of you haven’t), knows about her less than noble inclination towards certain groups. The professor has an opinion, just like all of us. Just because we don’t agree, doesn’t make her evil.

    2. Truth according to whom or what exactly? Does she have legitimate proof of her statements or is she simply just trying to run her big mouth with weightless and pathetic truth claims? Just reading headlines never tells you the real story, nor does it every give anyone all the details they need to use critical thinking skills, that oh by the way, are supposed to be what college is all about. Crappy professor and an example for any student if you ask me.

      2. True, never said her son was the sharpest knife in the drawer, but we were not the only country to invade Iraq. I had friends who fought over there and contrary to what the news said, chemical weapon caches were found and destroyed. We did not get a drop of oil from that whole thing either, so oil was never a reason for the war.
        I do agree with you about throwing his dead mother under the bus.

      5. I know emotional responses would be mostly the case when people say nasty things about the dead. Regardless of who died, I would simply say that Barbara is not here to defend herself. My question to Randa is simple; what is your standard of truth to which you determine right and wrong? This tells me if she even has a basis to complain or not.

I think it is safe to assume that Barbara Bush would have never spoken to Randa like this. She needs to also have her WordPress account taken down just like her Twitter page. I don’t care if people think she is a good writer or not, she is nothing more than a blowhard with overly adolescent tendencies.

  33. I wouldn’t say this professor was a bigot for voicing how she feels. President Trump does that on a regular. This professor said what was on her mind and that is, everything she felt about this over the top praise for Barbara Bush. And IF some are offended then oh well
