I had the pleasure of attending his cathedral when he first opened it many years ago on the cusp of Pert Amboy, New Jersey. Today in 2014, this man has one church but now in three (3) locations; Perth Amboy, Asbury Park and Plainfield, NJ.

He heralds from East Orange, New Jersey growing up in Scotch Plains, Bishop Donald Hilliard (pictured above) is senior pastor of Cathedral International in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and the published author of fourteen self-help and inspirational books (Somebody Say Yes, A Safe Harbor Begins @ Home, How Daddy Can Make A Difference, After The Fall: Resurrecting Your Life From Shame, Disgrace and Guilt, Journal Your Journey: This Too Will Pass, 55 And Counting.

Founder and CEO of the Cathedral Community Development Corporation (CCDC), an umbrella organization providing a variety of outreach services to the local community in Perth Amboy, including mental health support, a library, a banquet center and a creative dance center, Bishop Hilliard has also received numerous awards and citations for his efforts, both inside the church and beyond.

  19. The state of Black man in America is one of constant progresses and tremendous challenges that Black men face both inner and outer obstacles that are mountainous in stature.

    A lot of us don’t know the history of our people and the history of how we were treated AND MISTREATED. We must start marking the history of our people like the Jews and declare NEVER AGAIN!!

    In at least fifteen states, Black men were sent to prison on drug charges at rates ranging from twenty to fifty-seven times those of White men.

The reactions to the Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman verdict reveal a great deal of information about this society’s misguided beliefs on race and the willingness of its people to remain steadfast and dogmatically is extremely necessary. Like the Bishop said we must take action marching is good but what should we be doing to IGNITE change?

  33. The plight of the black brothaz in our society go beyond the traditional approaches to looking at the plight of black men, especially when it comes to determining the scope of joblessness. The official unemployment rate can be misleading because they do not include those brothaz not seeking work or incarcerated. So like the Bishop said Trace, your question was wide and loaded!!!!!! But a good show none-the-less!

Real good show Trace because the police killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, coming on the heals of the killing of Eric Garner, an unarmed Black man by a policeman’s choke hold in Staten Island, New York, is yet another painful, traumatic reminder of the long history of occupation, torture, abuse and killing of Black people in America, particularly Black men.   38. The question of the hour is, and has been for far too long, when will the killing of Black men and the occupation of Black communities stop? For the past several years, I have been repetitively crying out that there is a State of Emergency in Black America. This was a steering topic Ms. Tra. Bishop Hilliard shole had the answers too.

Unless and until this nation makes a firm and irreversible commitment to ensure that all people who live in this society will enjoy access to the same social and economic rights – good jobs, quality education, housing, health care, clean environment – instability, non-violence, and crime…This will continue to be problem amongst us.

  43. The State of the black man? I agree with Bishop Preacher that we not being killed but killing each other. when we need to do better however still doesn’t justify the execution of our brothaz in these streets.
