Legendary actress Ruby Dee has died at age 91, a family member confirmed Thursday.

The Grammy-award winning actress is best known for her stage and screen work in films such as “A Raisin in the Sun” (1961), Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” (1989), and the 1979 TV movie “Roots: The Next Generation”.

She was married to actor Ossie Davis until his death in 2005.

Ruby Dee died peacefully at home of natural causes.

  2. R.I.P. 😥 …. Raisin in the Sun was on TV just last week. she was an awesome actress, activist, and advocate – hopefully she’ll be remembered as such.

    This woman had a beautiful presence in the company of everyday people. Had the pleasure of meeting her once with the Late Gordon Parks. She and her late hubby had a lovely union.

  5. Such a beautiful woman! I remember when I first watched the film, A Raisin In The Sun I kept thinking about how pretty she was. WOW…she lived such an amazing life. RIP, Queen!

  7. This is a truly sad moment. RIP Ruby Dee.

    She had a full life, with a long career filled with performances people should be studying for years to come. And she made it a point to work for and promote worthy causes, and participated in the civil rights movement.

    I was blessed to see her and Denzel perform on Broadway in Checkmates (free ticket-2nd row center!). Was surprised to see how tiny she was, given that her presence and personality on stage were huge.

    She was a wonderful actress and activist and will be sorely missed. 😦

  9. I am going to miss her so so much. She brought her own unique and special style to the film and theatre industry. She really was a gift from God.
