Disturbing images of Dr. Martin Luther King turned up all over the internet by Michigan party promoters, advertising freedom to twerk parties in honor of the King Holiday weekend.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s head was photo shopped onto the body of a man (pictured above) wearing a gold chain and throwing up “west side” hand gestures to advertise a holiday party.

The flier, which was created by promoter group “Mid-Michigan Teen Parties“, billed the event as a chance to express one undeniable right that wasn’t apart of King’s agenda and that is, the “Freedom 2 Twerk.”

Other fliers were also circulating promoting a King Holiday party weekend by quoting excerpts from his famous “I have a dream” speech. “Free At Last” anyone 21 and over free until midnight”.

Dr. Martin Luther King was a champion for justice, equality, tolerance and non-violence and these images and gestures promoting such parties in honor of a holiday activist fought so hard to observe, are highly disrespectful!

I think the reason they have such little respect about Dr.King and the Civil Rights struggle is because most black homes do not teach about the Civil Rights struggle and therefore you have this young generation that have absolutely no clue about the past.

        How you figure it’s funny? when It’s aimed at teens who might not understand that the photo of MLK JR is a photo-shopped picture. It’s a big deal because MLK JR wouldn’t stand for this type of foolery and manipulation. MLK JR was a man who sacrificed his life fighting for minorities to have equality. More importantly, if MLK JR was “just some average JOE” I seriously doubt the United States of America would honor him under US federal holidays.

  51. Ok let’s stay mindful that this is a very different time, and the torch is still lit. MLK has accomplished a lot and he is was still a just man but not God Almighty. He had his faults just as ALL humans do. Those faults didn’t stop him from doing what he was called and chosen to do. He will remain a person in history for generations not only to study but for the chosen coming to emulate him as well. I doubt seriously that this poster or it content has any propensity to diminish MLK’S character nor end his accomplishments. This too shall pass. Lets keep it moving.

  52. Its funny- at first, with all my academic degrees and my study of Dr. King, visits to Atlanta, and his monument in DC, I know this is incredibly disrespectful of the man.
