In case you missed it, BET’s original scripted series, Being Mary Jane starring Gabrielle Union aired last night after much fanfare.

Many are wondering if the show is “life imitating art” as Union’s character is in love with and can’t let go of a married man. The show addresses infidelity, adultery and premarital sex as the norm for a successful black woman. This depiction is both disturbing and somewhat unrealistic.

Union’s character secretly yearns for a man and family of her own but sees this goal as unattainable due to the perplexed marriage to her career.

Last night’s show was the first of eight series, my question is…will you continue to watch?

      I agree…why does a black woman’s “complexity” seem to come from drama with men they can’t have. I like the show but being in a long term relationship I think I’m losing my ability to relate to this type of messiness…

        And I do agree with Lexy that this show plays into the messiness that is life sometimes. Nothing far-fetched. One of the hottest topics of discussion is black women and men/marriage. There’s no denying it.

  13. I’m looking forward to the season…I didn’t like the shower scene at the end of the show though but I’m curious to see how the wife acts now…it is a tad bit scandalish BUT I think they have done enough to separate themselves from Scandal…

    I enjoyed the show last night and the previews look great so far

  17. I enjoyed the show. I can separate real life for entertainment. Some things irked me but overall what else is really popping that is scripted right now?
    I think Gabby has a clause that says must show my 😆 at least once a show. She looked good.

  18. I really enjoyed it. I already knew I would. Mara Brock Akil is a beast. I hate that the fine dude wants to be around and treat her all good, but doesn’t want to commit. If they aren’t in a relationship what in the hail was he doing in her house when she got home from saving her suicidal friend? I fear married dude is going to be around a while. Too bad for poor Mary Jane. I’m with Mary Jane’s dad. I agree that mama needs to just go ahead and die already.
