Home Owner Charged in the Shooting death of Renisha McBride

The home owner has been identified as Theodore Wafer, 54, and he faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Renisha McBride, who died of a gunshot wound to her face.

Theodore P. Wafer, 54, of Dearborn Heights, also faces a manslaughter charge in the death of Renisha McBride in the early-morning hours of Nov. 2, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. McBride was shot in the face after police say they believe she was involved in a car accident nearby in Detroit and family members say she likely approached Wafer’s home for help.

Civil rights groups have called for a thorough investigation, saying they believe race was a factor in the shooting of McBride who was black, Wafer is white. Prosecutors insisted that race was not relevant.

“In this case, the charging decision has absolutely nothing to do with the race of the parties,” Worthy said Friday.

Evidence showed McBride knocked on the locked screen door, Worthy said, and that there was no sign of forced entry.

“These are the appropriate charges and he did not act in lawful self-defense,” Worthy said.

Wafer is not in custody and that prosecutors will ask him to turn himself in, Worthy said. An arraignment is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Associated Press tried to leave a message for Wafer’s attorney, Cheryl Carpenter, but her voicemail was full.

  33. Keep this in mind people.. it is the race of the victim that usually determines the type of justice and sentencing the offender recieves.. Think hard and long about this.. Think back to cases involving minorities.. This is that “3/5 a person” rule in effect….Ya’ll need to wake up… I tell ya if we weren’t such good “consumers” the world would swear they had no use for us!

        I actually do think that he’ll be convicted, likely of manslaughter. IMO Zimmerman is a racist sociopath. I suspect that this guy Wafer was drunk/high that night and would take his actions back if he could (not that this is an excuse or much comfort to her family). RIP Renisha; šŸ˜¦ terrible tragedy this is.

        From what has been put out there as of now, there is NO justification for firing a weapon at this woman. I don’t know that there could ever be any justification, I can’t think of one in this case. That being said, there are people who knock, you open the door and they bum rush you. Or nobody answers and they proceed to rob an unoccupied house.

        Bottom line, if someone knocks at your door and you are scared for any reason, call the fucking police and let them handle it. Don’t just shoot without reason.

  38. not blaming the victim but if you’re gonna drink,drink responsibly and the people she was with if she was with anyone at all, should’ve never allowed her behind the wheel of her car and they should’ve made sure she got home safely. This killing is/was senseless and going anywhere inebriated and alone is dangerous.

  41. I would love to think the justice system will do it’s job in this case and I will eat my words if I’m wrong but I won’t hold my breath. It took entirely too long for him to be arrested and he still gets the pleasure of turning himself in smh

  42. He is charged, but will he be convicted? If he is found guilty, it probably will be a lesser charge or acquitted. They only trying to hush the black community.
