The Senate Rejects House Amendments to Spending Bill; Gov’t Shut Down at Midnight

The Senate Rejects House Amendments to Spending Bill

The Senate voted today to reject the House GOP’s amendment to defer ObamaCare for one year. The provision was killed by an all-Democratic vote earlier today. The House GOP’s amendments also included a Conscience Clause, or an opt-out for contraceptive coverage.

The ball is back in the House GOP’s court. Unless there is a last minute change of heart by the House GOP leaders, the government will shut down at midnight tonight.

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) stands by his decision not to accept a spending bill that does not include provisions to delay or defund ObamaCare for at least one year.

President Barack Obama said he was not resigned to a shutdown and plans to continue talking to congressional leaders.

From the Washington Post:

The Senate rejected House amendments to a short-term spending bill Monday, killing a provision that would delay President Obama’s health-care law and moving the U.S. government closer to its first shutdown in nearly two decades.

The Senate vote came shortly after Obama said he was not resigned to a shutdown and plans to continue talking to congressional leaders.

The 54 to 46 party-line vote made good on a vow by Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) to reject a funding bill approved by the House early Sunday because it would delay Obama’s signature 2010 health-care law for one year and repeal a tax on medical devices.

Immediately after the Senate convened Monday afternoon, Reid moved to table the House amendments. That exercise required a simple majority and was accomplished solely with Democratic votes.

  1. Only one reason why all this extra high school stuff is going on. Sad thing is it aint even about money or health which should be the focus. It’s about our Prez

  2. The so-called “conscience clause” would allow employers and insurers to opt out of preventative care for women which they find objectionable on moral or religious grounds. That prominently includes birth control, which most insurers are required to provide for free under current Obamacare rules.
With this move, House Republican leaders would give any employer or group health plan the ability to opt out of contraception coverage for the next year. That time frame syncs up with the larger measure in which this is included: a one-year delay of Obamacare provisions not yet in effect

FYI.. I had to look it up.. Jacked from CNN

Good thing there wasn’t social media the last time(s) the government shut down during the Clinton Administration. This is mass pandemonium, and half of those crying foul don’t even understand checks and balances and certainly won’t show up to vote in non-presidential year elections

  4. so since the government is shut down, do I still have to pay my taxes outta my check. Ain’t nobody to collect the money right. Automatic deposit is a rip off in these situations. Maybe if the folks we voted into office had their paychecks stopped and family benefits stopped, maybe they would come up with a solution instead of shutting down the government.

I think the jerks holding up everything on the REPs side and putting people in furlough status while they have their tantrums should be removed from their position. If you showed up for work and had a strike and had a hissy fit b/c you didn’t like what was happening at work, you’d likely get replaced pronto. We are the laughing stock of the world. If I had money, I’d move to Canada with the quickness. UGHHHH!

  11. But even before the midnight launch of ObamaCare, many Americans said they would refuse to sign up for ObamaCare, and instead they would accept the 1% of income penalty that will be imposed if Americans don’t carry insurance in January 2014.

  14. Most people see this as a sign of a dictatorship vs a democracy. When you FORCE a democratic country to do something, then you negating the very premise that his country was founded on. I get everybody NEEDS healthcare, but some simply cannot pay for it. Even if you have insurance, you still have to come out of pocket 20%.

It would be different if it wasnt mandatory and it was an option. Dont penalize people for being poor. But you cannot go against the President b/c ppl will label you as a hater.

  15. While everyone should have access to affordable healthcare, there ARE some things in the ACA that needs changing:
*Congress defined “affordable” as 9.5% or less of an employee’s household income, mostly to make sure people did not leave their workplace plans for subsidized coverage through the exchanges. But the “error” was that it only applies to the employee — and not his or her family. So, if an employer offers a woman affordable insurance, but doesn’t provide it for her family, they cannot get subsidized help through the state health exchanges.
*say for instance you love your current plan, but it doesn’t cover XYZ, you have to go to the new plan regardless and your premiums will rise.
*If it’s so good, then why isn’t Congress or even Obama on It.
It’s a start, but it needs tweaking. Both sides need to get it together. Not fair for people to be out of work for even a day. Congress and Obama still gone get paid though. We should have universal healthcare with a higher tax rate, but folks gone complain about that too. If you want quality you gone pay for it.

For the past year the republicans and the house have been using a govt shut down as a threat over the senate so that the repubs can get what they want, hence the 1% never getting an increase in taxes and the general public having to pay payroll taxes. Its about time they show them because the repubs are forgetting they have elections coming up and this dont reflect too well for them

Because he knows better, and could have prevented the shut-down. And because, as America’s third-ranking constitutional officer, after the President and vice president, he is supposed to serve America’s interests — not the febrile demands of his party’s most rabid partisans. That’s Eric Cantor’s job. he fucked up big time and will pay cause people don’t 4get!

  25. Hi – Scriptures are from the King James Holy Bible.

An Answer to the Government Shutdown

For those who steadfastly abide in GOD – He is NOT shut down. His Word
still applies to us. Certainly, He shall supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

GOD is NOT limited by the government shutdown. The Holy Bible states that the government is on His shoulder. GOD is not limited by the economy, the selfishness/foolishness of men, or any other circumstance. Our Lord will get provisions to His children and to some of the devil’s children, as well. That’s the kind of GOD He is – being GOD anyhow is His way. And doing what is unconventional is GOD’s signature style.

    Our Lord says:

Don’t you dare waver from My Word because the earthly government shut down. Keep your heads up, peps in your steps, and songs in your heart. Surely, I shall get to you what you
