We all remember this case that stayed in the news and pushed Al Sharpton to the forefront as an activist.

In 1987, Tawana Brawley the then 15-year-old teen who falsely accused former New York prosecutor Steven Pagones, 52, of gang raping and kidnapping her, while naming him a racist.

Brawley had been well hidden and alluding the scandal by living in rural town in Virginia under the alias of Tawana Thompson and Tawana Gutierrez. Well Tawana has been ordered to pay Mr. Pagones $431,000 in damages, which Brawley sent him her first payment in ten (10) checks totaling $3,764.61 last week. This comes after a Virginia court ordered the money garnished from Brawley’s wages as a nurse.

This payment comes 15 years after a court ruled that Brawley defamed Pagones with a nasty hoax that ruined his life and sullied his reputation.

Brawley’s advisers in the case; the Reverend Al Sharpton, and attorneys C. Vernon Mason and Alton Maddox have already paid, or are paying their debt to Pagones. Until now, Brawley, 41, has refused to pay out but she is now forced to cough up $627 each month to the man who is one of three whose name she dragged through the mud in 1987.

Brawley will possibly pay this debt to Pagones for the rest of her life however, he is willing to drop the debt owed by Brawley if she would simply confess that she lied on him. Pagones also made note how, Sharpton and his crew have not spoken about this case since the outcome. I’m sure all men involved realize that Brawley made a fool out of them all.

  3. When I found out she lied, I was so angry and embarrassed. she cried wolf about being raped and then she played the race card she destroyed the people she accused (one guy committed suicide) and she damaged our community. She should have gone to jail.

  7. I am a victim of multiple assaults and people like her make it hard for real victims to get support. She’s lucky she isn’t being charged for lying.

      1. Tawana was spotted at her bf house the day she supposedly was raped by the white men if I recall. They supposedly put her in a garbage bag but somebody saw her climbing IN the bag? I was young when all of that happened.

        Natasha She lied tho. And Al told her this is your story and you sticking to it. So she has maintained said lie for decades now.

On November 28, 1987, Tawana Brawley, who had been missing for four days from her home in Wappingers Falls, New York, was found seemingly unconscious and unresponsive, lying in a garbage bag several feet from an apartment where she had once lived. Her clothing was torn and burned, her body smeared with feces. She was taken to the emergency room, where the words “KKK”, “****”, and “Bitch” were discovered written on her torso with a black substance described as charcoal.

        A detective from the Sheriff’s Juvenile Aid Bureau, among others, was summoned to interview Brawley, but she remained unresponsive. The family requested a black officer, which the police granted. Brawley, described as having an “extremely spacey” look on her face, communicated with this officer with nods of the head, shrugs of the shoulder, and written notes. The interview lasted 20 minutes, during which she uttered only one word: “neon.” Through gestures and writing, however, she indicated she had been raped repeatedly in a wooded area by three white men, at least one of them a police officer. A sexual assault kit was administered, and police began building a case.

        Brawley provided no names or descriptions of her assailants. She later told others that there had been no rape, only other kinds of sexual abuse. Forensic tests found no evidence that a sexual assault of any kind had occurred. There was no evidence of exposure to elements, which would have been expected in a victim held for several days in the woods at a time when the temperature dropped below freezing at night.
