Prejudice, Racist, What she said

Food Network Fired Paula Deen

Paula Deen Apology

Her southern cooking made her famous, now her racist comments just might ruin her career.

Celebrity chef Paula Deen is reeling from the backlash to her admission that she routinely calls black people “niggers.” In a video released by her camp today, Deen struggles to apologize in the midst of the embarrassment of being exposed.

Deen, 66, made the controversial admission in a videotaped deposition for a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by the former general manager of her popular Savannah, GA restaurant.

She smiled as she fondly recalled wanting to create a slavery-themed wedding where the black wait staff were dressed as slaves in an antebellum mansion down south.

Deen said she got the idea for the slave wedding from a southern restaurant she visited with her husband.

“The whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie,” she said.

Deen added: “I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America… after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War. It was not only black men, it was black women. I would say they were slaves.”

Do you forgive her for being what she is from birth?

She insulted black folks and most white people dont care, because they feel the same way she does. People will complain for a little bit, then she will be alright.

  3. What REALLY stuck in my craw though…was how she answered that ? in the deposition.
Q: Have you ever used the N-word?
    Deen : Yes, OFCOURSE!
Ofcourse??? WTF!! “Ofcourse” is the kinda indignant answer you give when somebody asks if you brush your teeth everyday. I read HER “ofcourse” like “ofcourse I’ve used the N word…what ELSE am I supposed to call them?”

It’s funny because she could of gotten away with it. I doubt there is a white person in North America who hasn’t said “Nigger”. For me it was her phrasing. I’m still having trouble with her “Yes, of course.”
That statement implies pride . . . and you know what they say about pride.

      **************
This kinda stuff coming from what I’m assuming is a Black person, concerns me on soooooo many levels.
It’s NOT just the utterance of the N word…it’s her apparent BELIEF that Black people are inferior. Hence her wanting to see a wedding “plantation style” with Black folks dressed like slaves.
Hence her resturants having MANY Blacks working in the kitchen…but maybe 1 or 2 in the front.
Hence her using the N word as she angrily described the Black man that she alleges held a gun to her head. (My momma told me that folks WILL tell their TRUE feelings when they are eitha drunk..or mad.)
My discontent is NOT with the word..it’s the MINDSET. So if we give Paula Deen a pass and “let her live” because her feelings that Black people are indeed inferior..are no big deal……then perhaps Zimmerman should get the same pass. After all, that’s HIS mindset too.

      1. Ashanti,
Assuming me to be black would be logical being I am on a “black” blog, but realistically I’m a little bit of a lot of things which has no bearing on my opinion. I’ll say this, I don’t care about her mindset or beliefs because I do have the option of not having to deal with her. That’s the beauty of choice. Now referencing Travon, I’m not sure how we go from speaking an unkind to murder. Murder is unjustifiable with no chance of recompense while Paula has the opportunity to learn and grow from this experience without the burden of such an unforgivable act. I live for forgiveness because I require it daily. But please feel free to stay mad because that is your choice to make.

If you don’t want white people to say it then “Black people need to stop saying it. They only calling you what we call ourselves. Is that wrong??

      ———
Can you really be THIS obtuse?
I HIGHLY doubt that Tupac and Lil Wayne ever used the word N-I-G-G-A to infer that they were racially superior to OTHER Black folks they used it in reference to! Surely you can understand the difference when the letters NIGG are followed by an “a”…rather than an “er”?
And I’m not too concerned with what a FICTIONAL TV character (Archie Bunker) said…and btw..the character Archie NEVER used THAT word..he used other slurs, but not the N word..look it up.
Again, it’s not the word so much as the MINDSET behind the use of the word. So the well-worn, unoriginal excuse of “so what…Blacks use the word all the time” just doesn’t cut it.
      *sigh* Let my people go.

No disrespect to my Black Southern neighbors. I love the hospitality, food and love…but most of the white folks I ran into were intolerable for a born and bred Black Northern.

Her son looked kinda kool…but basically when I lived in Georgia I had a African-American friend from Americus, GA who lovedddd Paula, got her book, and wanted to visit her restaurant in Savannah. I thought it would be kool, but looking back how can someone who grows up in the deep south, among racist people, come to adore the actual person who has the same characteristics that brings our people so much pain? My answer is maybe deep in her mind she still sought out the acceptance of “People Like Paula Deen”…like as a victim she has come to love the victimizer….food for thought.

First, who mentions that their black ‘friend’ is “blacker than that blackboward (not board)” on camera? Second, she shoulda just said she doesn’t use the word and can’t recall ever using it, like most Whites would say. Stupid, not ignorant, stupid, cause she knows no better. At least ignorant people know right from wrong. Stupid people are just that. Stupid. Good for nothing.

I wouldnt put it past her that she is appalled that a nigga is in the white house. Lets keep it one hundred, Deen has deep rooted hatred for niggas plain and simple. Its in her spirit you can see it in her eyes.

Beyond which, people can change, growing past wrongful ways in the name of what’s right. We pass new laws. We adopt new language. That’s the recipe for progress: putting justice ahead of habit, principle over precedent.

It’s not one that’s been mastered by Deen, whose worst ingredient isn’t corn syrup or Crisco but willful obtuseness.”
