Rutgers Fires Abusive Coach Amid Public Outcry (Video)

Rutgers University has fired men’s basketball coach Mike Rice less than 24 hours after ESPN’s Outside the Lines aired shocking video footage of Rice verbally and physically abusing his players.

The video footage shows an unhinged Rice physically attacking his players and throwing basketballs at their heads during practice.

The video sparked anger and outrage on Wednesday. NBA star LeBron James vented his anger on Twitter.com Tuesday, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was “deeply disturbed” by the video.

The saddest aspect of the video was the players, seeing their spirits broken, absorbing the abuse heaped on them by their coach as if they had no other choice but to accept the abuse. 3 basketball players transferred to other schools as a result of Rice’s abuse.

The video was turned over to the school last Summer by former director of player development Eric Murdock, whose contract was not renewed after he came forward with the allegations. Murdock has since filed a lawsuit against Rutgers.

Murdock, who is black, sat for an interview with Outside The Lines.

With his behavior and temper I’m glad he was fired. Good for him.

  1. I could care less about what the guy has done. I’d rather focus on punishing the morons who decided to delay firing him.

  2. There’s a line you don’t cross, especially when your coaching. This guy has “Serious Anger “, issues which affected his ability to coach, but most of all, disrespecting his players staff and school. One thing to yell and 25 extra laps, 50 extra pull ups; but gotta worry about a guy like this going postal somewhere? He should have been fired back in Dec 012. When are educational Institutions going to stop covering up for this type of behavior.

  3. What really made me angry when I watched the video wasn’t so much the yelling, because all coaches yell; it was watching Rice punching, kicking and throwing balls at the boys’ heads. You don’t put your hands on other people’s kids. You keep your hands to yourself. I am outraged that the school gave him a slap on the wrist – as if that kind of behavior is to be tolerated.

  6. Good he got fired, but what is worse is that the school knew about it and wanted to “rehabilitate” him before the video came to light. Now all of a sudden its so wrong and the school has decided to change course…gtfoh.

  13. And this is the EXACT same culture Penn State had when it came to football that they forgot about the very ppl the program was centered around: THE KIDS. The fuck is wrong with these ppl? Is winning that damn important that you sacrifice the well-beings of these kids?

Me too, but I’m sure they were thinking of all the advantages they would get with being a college baller. They probably thought it came with the territory attending that particular school. But the stress must have been horrendous! I couldn’t imagine what I would do, let alone what my parents would do if they found out some mess like this.
