Celebrating Our History, Tonight on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

To kick off Black History month, we remember Phillis Wheatley, a slave child of seven or eight and sold to John and Susanna Wheatley in Boston on July 11, 1761.  Her first name was apparently derived from the ship that carried her to America, The Phillis. She was the first African American to publish a book, an accomplished African-American woman of letters and First African American woman to earn a living from her writing.

Phillis’ popularity as a poet both in the United States and England ultimately brought her freedom from slavery on October 18, 1773.  She even appeared before General Washington in March, 1776 for her poetry and was a strong supporter of independence during the Revolutionary War. She felt slavery to be the issue which separated whites from true heroism: whites can not “hope to find/Devine acceptance with the Almighty mind” when “they disgrace/And hold in bondage Africa’s blameless race.”

        Can’t quiet follow the comment trail but whoever said this show sounds boring don’t really know the history of US! And we as African American people are NEVER boring…Ms. Tracy gives a good show and has great commentary, that alone is worth tuning in.

  11. No I’m always ashamed/or embarassed when I don’t know a pioneer from our history. But I’ve heard of Phillis Wheatley. I’ll also tune in to Tracy’s show to hear more about her. I know she was a slave but she did great things.

  13. where everybody at? nows the time for the talk and the chit chatter. it’s black history month, well not just in feb but erday with me. but where’s the conversation about our people? how come ain’t nobody talkin?         We are the only people with a month (BHM) and it’s the shortest month on the calendar in February at that.

  17. It’s black history month all day everyday in my world…Phillis Wheatly made most of her accomplishments young. I took BH in HS so I’ve heard about Phillis Wheatley. I know she was def a slave and a black poet. some of her poetry is hard to read, the language is so broken.

  20. I love the story of Phillis Wheatley. I thought she was a brave slave. Sad that in the end she had no one to teach her how to handle her money. Tracy I’m looking forward to hear what you will add to her story. 🙂

  21. Wheatley’s poetry was different. That’s because it was written for her time. If Tracys reads one on the air. vs. one of hers the comparison is different.

  22. I’m one who couldn’t relate to her poetry I had a professor in college who had us study them. She does get the credit for being the 1st AA poet, writer and published author though. Can’t wait to hear Tracy’s show. Hope she reads us one of hers.

  27. Phillis Wheatley is one of those boring African Amercan poets but I respect her place in history and all that she’s contributed. Tuning in to hear Tra’s spin on this. Gotta support my girl.

    Loved Tracy’s poem, Phillis Wheatley’s a bit patriotic to me but I got it.
    Dude who rapped the opening intro was good he just lacked a little enthusiasium (sp)
    Can’t wait for next week to hear about woman in business.

        It depends, when she has a guest sometimes she does take it longer. when that loud mouth (light bright negroe) was on there she went past the hour. so her flow fluxes but it’s all good imo.

    I love Ms. Blog Queen on blog talk radio. keeps her human.
    The intro with the guy rapping took me off gaurd, he has the voice for it but because the lyrics weren’t dropped on that “what U want” song it was real hard to focus on him dinging in it with his lyrics. He was good though liked how he plugged in the title of the show at the end.

      Thought the show was good too. Tracy sounded like she was reading a monologue on Phillis Wheatley. I loved how she threw her poem in there at the end. I thought that was an extra bonus 🙂 Phillis Wheatley’s poem was short and to her point. and although I couldn’t relate to it, i understood where she was coming from.
