Betty & Coretta Premieres Feb. 2 on Lifetime

With Black History month approaching, Lifetime television have rolled out their movie premiers for the month. Angela Bassett will star as Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow Coretta Scott King, who expanded his message of nonviolence and equality to a global audience until her death in 2006, in a Lifetime movie which will premiere on February 2nd.

To kick off black history month, Bassett stars as Mrs. King opposite singer Mary J. Blige as Dr. Betty Shabazz in the Lifetime original movie Betty and Coretta.

The film tells the converging stories of two very different young women united by a commitment to social justice and their struggle to raise their children alone while forging legacies from those of their slain spouses. It’s an angle that the mom of two (with actor husband Courtney B. Vance) particularly appreciates.

Both women were equally significant in their own right.

Ruby Dee narrates the film, as the film opens up with her semi-fictional character commenting on President Obama’s 2011 dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Betty and Coretta premieres Feb. 2 at 8/7 CT on Lifetime.

  2. Nothing against my girl Mary J. Blige, but I can’t believe the film producers couldn’t find a notable actress to portray Dr. Betty Shabazz. You have the extremely gifted and talented Angela Bassett in this movie, with Mary J. the singer? C’mon!!!!!

you dang on sure need another talented sister who can hold her own against Ms. Angela Bassett and I don’t think Mary J. can 😦 *side eye*

      1. You also have to remember this is a Lifetime Movie not one being nominated for the Oscars or anything. It is only a TV film, despite the actors, they are recognizing the work of both women and you can complain about the actresses as long as you remember the purpose of the film–for their stories to be told.

        Lexy,
Even though I would love to see a movie about the three women together, Mrs. Evers-Williams does have a story. It is called Ghosts of Mississippi.

Tyler Perry has given her a chance in his movie but that’s about it. her with Angela Bassett a seasoned actress, we’ll see how that will work out.

  7. I am looking forward to this movie. Angela Bassett is an extradinary actress. Mary J Blige is making her debute in such a dramatic role. Both women exemplifying the images of two positive female role models in African American History. God Bless you Angela and Mary. Thank you Lifetime Movies for making this possible.

  8. I like Mary J and Angela Bassett but it seems like Mary isnt going to bring it to this movie as far as the acting. This seems like one of those “Beyonce Cadillac records performances”. I’m pulling for Mary to do better thou. let’s keep our fingers crossed y’all.

  10. I love that lifetime is expanding their drama films to include black history. They remade Steel Magnolias… and the movie about the Kidnapping. BET & TV One needs to learn from Lifetime about making these films. I know they don’t have the same budget but I’m sure they can handle some good writers…
