Her Parents Found out she was dead, via Facebook!

Jasmine Benjamin (pictured above), a 17-year-old nursing student at Valdosta State University from Lawrenceville, Ga., was found dead in a study area of her dorm on Nov. 18. Georgia police are treating the death as a homicide, pending the results of an autopsy test. Jasmine’s parents say they found out about their daughter’s death via Facebook.

“For someone to be so insensitive not to reach out to the family, it’s very, very hurtful to say the least,” James Jackson, Jasmine’s stepfather, told the network.

School officials say campus police notified the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department, which then notified her parents. Jackson said police told him that Jasmine “had been dead for at least 12 hours before she was found, because passers-by thought she was simply sleeping on the study room couch” which only adds to the family’s frustration.

In a statement released Monday, the university said it is “continuing to work with law enforcement agencies in their ongoing investigation.”

Parents… stay in touch with your college bound students, the devil coupled with tragedy is likely to strike anywhere.

  7. This is sad but seriously? While I understand this family’s frustration, what university checks on every student after a certain amount of time? People crash on study lounge couches all the time. Sleeping there for 12 hours was not uncommon where I went, especially if your roommate hung a sock on the doorknob. . .

    1. Point,
At my school, our dorm counselor do a floor check and she does check on study lounges so, I can’t see how people didn’t bother to check on her? 😦 Sad just sad. she was only 17? What the hell happened? Scary.

  12. If parents attended the orientation, this information was given. Please get familiar with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act . It was enacted to protect students by requiring colleges to get written permission from students to share information about them with others, parents included. By law, colleges are prohibited to contact parents. If it involved a crime, they shall notify police and the police will notify the parents. This law has been here for 4 decades.

No excuse…. her parents should have still known b4 it was posted on a social media website. That campus shoulda been locked down when she was discovered dead too. I hope the parents exercise all their rights and sue the shit out everyone who mishandled the info till they are satisfied.
