How was Chavis Carter (pictured here) shot while handcuffed?

Police in Jonesboro, Arkansas have launched an investigation into how 21-year-old Chavis Carter was shot in the head while he sat handcuffed in the back of a patrol car Saturday night.

According to Officers Keith Baggett and Ron Marsh who was on the scene, “Carter was in the passenger seat of a pickup truck that was pulled over by police just before 10 pm. Officer Marsh found “some marijuana” and several new plastic baggies when he searched Carter.

When they (police) ran Carter’s information through dispatch, they found that he was wanted on a warrant in Mississippi, where he lived. The cops then handcuffed him, searched him again, and put him in the back of the patrol car. While Baggett searched the vehicle, he claims he heard “a loud thump with a metallic sound” on his trunk and saw Marsh motion to him.

The thumping noise, according to the cops, was Carter shooting himself in the head.

The police report attributed the death to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though when the two officers opened the squad car door, they found Carter’s hands were still cuffed behind his back. The gun, they said, was somehow missed in both searches.

Police believe that Chavis managed to pull out a hidden gun and shot himself in spite of the handcuffs. I’m wondering how is that even possible? 

Carter’s mother, Teresa, however, suspects foul play: “I think they killed him, my son wasn’t suicidal.”

According to Teresa, Carter called his girlfriend while he was pulled over to tell her he’d call her from jail. She also said her son was shot in his right temple, when he was left-handed.

The two officers involved are now on administrative leave until the investigation concludes.

  4. How do you search an individual twice and not find a handgun? A knife ok but a handgun? They can easily check his hands for gun powder to determine if he pulled the trigger.

    How the heyul was he able to get to a gun that they couldn’t find on him while he was HANDCUFFED in a police car to be able to shoot himself.

        The police officer shot this young man and murdered him. Before handcuffing a suspect, the police usually check him or her for weapons. Only then do they read the person his or her rights, before placing them under arrest and taking them to the police station. No suspect who is under arrest can have access to a gun. If he did, then the police officer who performed the arrest must be the most mentally retarded. It was murder, pure and simple.

  28. From day 1 Black men have been considered and treated as inferior and criminals in the eyes of the law. There are many many things that so many black men (all races truthfully) could be doing that they don’t do but it doesn’t change the fact that to an officer looking for a suspect or a small minded person a black man in a business suit is considered more threatening than any other race out there. It’s sad, it’s hurtful, it’s insanity but it’s the truth and unfortunately it isn’t likely to change at any time in the near future. 😦

  37. Both officers should be fired and jailed since the other officer obviously was there and witnessed the shooting. They should be given a LIE DETECTOR TEST.

    A lie detector test should be the law of the land for all law enforcement who threatens or shoots an individual. Why not; they have all sorts of laws and rules for the American People. Racist Bastids.

    *did that driver witness what happened?
    *if so has he come forward and said anything?

  57. I’m outraged!!!!! But despite my outrage, that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a terrible tragedy and another story of racially-motivated police brutality. Something needs to be done about this. The worst part is that these PIGS are given a vacation for shooting an unarmed African American man. Do they really expect people to believe their story? If you’re gonna murder someone, at least try to cover it up…but that might be coming next.

    or the two young men that was in police custody in florida that just disappeared and parents never saw them again officer claim he let them go but cameras show police vehicle but nobody got out but officers also still under investigation.

    this is happening all over the country sounds like genocide to me. Furthermore got a feeling we will see an even greater increase of this happening the closer we get to elections. sounding more and more like these people have an agenda sadly though nobody watching this thing closely. by the way not just african americans but latinos as well. deliberately suppressing the black vote as well as other minorities. watch this closely very closely.

  63. This story is so unbelievable. Lets see.. the police search him twice and only find a small bag of weed but not a GUN!?! They handcuff him and place him in the small confines of a squad car. Where Chavis somehow located the hidden gun that they couldnt find (twice), somehow finds a way to contort his body in such a way to shoot himself in the temple. unles there is a way he dislocated his limbs or is the worlds best contortionist this is impossible! These police are lying.
