NCAA president Mark Emmert hit Penn State with a $60 million dollar fine and a 4-year suspension during a press conference.
Saying Penn State was too big to fail, Emmert spared Penn State the dreaded “death penalty.” Instead, he stripped the school of its football wins from 1998 through 2011 — which places Joe Paterno behind football legends Eddie Robinson and Bear Bryant as the most winningest coaches in football history.
In addition to losing 1 year in football revenues, the NCAA also imposed a 4-year bowl ban on Penn State. The NCAA will allow Penn State football players to transfer to other schools where they will be eligible to play immediately.
The announcement came one day after demolition crews tore down the Joe Paterno statue on the Penn State campus. Paterno, who died in January, is accused of turning a blind eye toward the child molestation charges lodged against his former coach Jerry Sandusky.

Idk about vacating the wins though although I can understand their perspective. Its not like the players themselves knew what was going on, it was higher management. That shouldn’t take away from what those players did on the field against their competitors.

Its not the biggest scandal…. Thats still happening in Scotland where Celtic football club had many of its Managers covering up SEX ABUSE for Jim Torbet in the 80s and where today the cover up has yet to lead to this club being punished.So many have came forward with admissions of GUILT but NO charges were every brought against this corrupt club because they have supporters of in high places of local government,media,courts.

IMO this penalty was nothing. You are talking about years of unreported criminal activity, and they get four years no bowl games, but the NCAA tried to throw the book at USC cause Reggie Bush was driving a range. The NCAA is more concerned w/ increasing and capitalizing on revenue than they are about the actual ethics of sports. Child Molestation and a culture of silence is much worse than extra-benefits, that ALL student-athletes may face at almost every Div in school. But they choose to make examples out of the big ones like SC’….wouldn’t have agreed with the death penalty but they should have taken the time to make a bigger example out of Penn State, especially when it went all the way to the top.

Tom Joyner made a good point this morning. SMU received the death penalty for paying its players but Penn State gets a penalty and suspension for raping kids 😦 WTF!

Not saying Penn State isn’t a big-name school, just saying when it comes to the student athletes taking extra benefits, the only ones the NCAA seems to care about are the bigger schools vs the mid-majors or smaller D-1′s

I don’t agree with vacating the wins, that doesn’t make sense to me. The players worked their asses off and now its just erased?! That is not fair.

Vacating wins and championships has always seemed dumb to me. It’s like how do we erase our memories of those games? I’m a huge sports fan and folks don’t just forget…and the people who’ve passed Joe Pa are only winners by default

Child abuse is the scourge of the earth, the authorities should be lauded in their attempt to bring this into the public domain and not keep it hidden like a dirty little secret.
My understanding is that the famous Glasgow Celtic are guilty of turning a blind eye to this kind of filthy act, they knowingly re hired a sex offender who preyed on youth players. I wonder what punishment will be handed out to this club and others who over the years have accepted this behavior.
It turns my stomach to think that these clubs accept such acts, where is the common decency that a sports organizations image is more important than the physical and mental well being of an innocent child.
A lifetime ban for both the clubs and the individuals involved.

The same thing happened in Scottish football (soccer). Celtic covered up child abuse in their Boys Club & claim to be the most righteous club in the world. A coach went to jail but it barely merited a mention in the “cover up scottish media”. Not only did they keep their trophies, they now want Rangers stripped of theirs to get their filthy paws on them too.

Kincora, Penn State, Glasgow Celtic, the Roman Catholics Church doesn’t matter who it is Dhougal, like the spelling, they are a disgrace to humanity and as such using the hospices of there clubs, churches or whatever to prey on the young and vulnerable is beyond disgusting.
Anyone irrespective of their leanings and backgrounds who choose to molest children should be jailed for life, hung if the truth be told. Organizations who knowingly harbor the perpetrators of such actions should have the doors closed for good.
It would restore a little belief in the corrupt world of sport if they actually took action on those individuals and clubs involved by closing them down and removing the individuals from the sport in every capacity.
Maybe FIFA or UEFA could take a lead from these actions.

Absolutely disgusting that an issue as serious can be just swept under the carpet by people in positions of power for a period of time. Although at least in this case the punishment was forthcoming. In Scotland regarding the case of Glasgow Celtic, no punishment has ever been applied to this dispikable club, but then again I imagine that is due to the clubs links to the catholic church
