I Saw Tyler Perry’s Movie, “Good Deeds” This Weekend…

Although Tyler Perry’s movie “Good Deeds” came in second at the box office this weekend by raking in $16 million, it came in at 1st place in my book…I loved this movie., the drama was typical but the storyline very much on point.

Walter and Wesley Deeds are brothers working and running a successful family owned corporate business. Wesley (Tyler Perry), the older and responsible brother, who plays his role as the good son is miserable, while Walter (Brian White) is a bitter alcoholic who is looked down upon by their mother (Phylicia Rashad).

All I will say is: Wesley Deeds is jolted out of his perfect and scripted life when he meets Lindsey (Thandie Newton), a single mother who works on the cleaning crew in his office building. Lindsey blows Wesley’s mind with her sass and outspoken nature, which indeed sends him in the opposite direction.

I love happy endings and was so moved by Perry’s performance. Okay, that’s all I’m going to say, you have to check it out for yourselves.

Good Deeds opened in theatres on Friday.

  1. There were so many messages in this film that I don’t even know where to start. The film demonstrates that no matter how much money you have in life, you can still be unhappy.

Ok, actually I wasn’t willing to risk $11.50 to see “Good Deeds” so I movie-hopped after I saw SafeHouse with Denzel (which was really, really good) and here’s my analysis:

He came across as stiff and wooden and totally unbelievable as a love interest. His sex scene with Gabby seemed so forced and unnatural. Other than that, I thought the movie was good.

Yeah Gabby (Natalie as T.P. Girlfreind) was unhappy too, she thought he was boring and predictable. But they were only hooked up because of their mothers. Thought the movie was awesome though.

I must agree with Perry miscast the BROTHER’S character (Brian White). Brian White is an AWFUL actor with below-level range. He couldn’t deliver a simple one-liner without being extra with it. Grabrielle Union was in her usual character, playing the PRETTY girl with no real acting range. Surprisly Tyler Perry was pretty decent, No comment on Thandie Newton, she brought it once again.

Thandie: Yeah even the reviewer for the Daily News said she was mis-cast but I think she did ok. What throws you off is her accent and the fact that she looks too elegant for the role of a janitor. Who would really believe that she’s pushing a mop for a living especially in a big city where some dude would scoop her up and willingly finance her situation?

  5. T.P obviously like working with Phylicia Rashad (Wilimena/his mother) because he has cast her in a couple of his films. I don’t care how many films I have seen her in; I will always view her as Mrs. Huxtable.

  6. Thandie Newton (Lindsey Wakefield) was off the hook as Lindsey!
She pulled that role off lovely!
Every time I see a homeless person on the streets I always ask myself, “I wonder how he/she got here”. Well, Lindsey answered that question for me in this film and makes me realize that sometimes it is to no fault of the individual. It’s just life and things happen.

  8. Why does all of his movies portray black women as pathetic individuals that need a man to save them? Don’t want to give away the movie to people who actually want to see it, but does he hate women that much that he can’t ever show healthy relationships in his movies, or is that just not entertaining?

Maybe because God intended for man to seek woman, be her provider, her warrior and prince charming. Maybe because man should want to RESTORE a woman that he’s interested in if she needs that…Thandie’s character was independent but Deeds (T.P.’s character) begged her to let him help her. if your man wanna do for you why not?

  9. I saw the movie but I think TP is GREEDY and UNFOCUSED. At his level of success he shldn’t be writing, directing, producing and staring in his own films anymore. And once you start looking at the Bottom Line (PROFITS) only, that’s when I stop supporting you.

    1. So let me get this straight, many of you claim if T.P. did NOT act in his own movies, you would then support him? STFU…you would just find some other reason to hate. I havent seen this movie but I plan to. To the person who said TP is only looking for profits…what planet do you live on? We are all looking to profit in some way or another. Will you go to work everyday and ask for nothing in return…I’ll wait. No, didn’t think so. Yes I am over the whole “Ma’dea” plots however if TP wants to continue to make movies, star in them while at the same time employing countless other minorities, I am all for it. Stop focusing on your dislike for TP, someone you do not even know personally, and look at the bigger picture.

  10. A movie about Tyler Perry trying to be a man. It was okay. Would not pay to see it again or even watch it on bootleg. I think he tries to do too much. He directs, produce, writes and stars in his own movies. Most directors and writers just write and directs, and I think that’s where he gets lost. He just tries to do too much and comes up short.

    JUST MY OPINION!!!

Ok I won’t tell y’all the ending of “Good Deeds” based on what my mom told me. I won’t give it away here but I can tell you as a college educated Black woman with an MBA and now looking at doctoral programs, the movie was very unrealistic, in terms of Black male/female relationships. But go ahead Black women and dream if you want too. This is a common theme in TPs movies and that’s why Black women love him, esp older ones.

Tyler Perry’s Character (Wesley Deeds) loved his fiance (Gabrielle Union) but fell in love with the janitor (Thandie Newton). Why? because deep down inside he knew his fiance wasn’t giving him the one simple thing that he was missing and that was THE TRUTH! The truth about their relationship or the truth about him being miserable in life. His fiance played the same role that bhe was raised to depise..he fell for Thandie’s character because she taught him how to relax, to seek what made him happy and to be real about it…and that’s what he did Most men are scared to LIVE THEIR TRUTH and his character did, and there’s NOTHING PERFECT ABOUT THAT. He was forced to face HIS TRUTH.
