What Will You Do To Celebrate The Dreamer?

Tomorrow we observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. It is a federal and state holiday and Post offices will be closed; there will be no regular mail delivery, state and local government offices will be closed as well, and banks and public schools have the option to close.

To commemorate the King holiday, people have converged on King’s monument in Washington, DC., but I’m hoping that people will remember his message, not the monument. In the meantime, President Barack and Michelle Obama are calling on the American people to volunteer their services.

Churches all over the world will have services today and tomorrow, remembering King as a civil rights activist who changed the course of history for racial equality in the United States.

In 1963 King helped organize the March on Washington, an assembly of more than  200,000 protestors at which he made his famous “I have a dream” speech. The  march influenced the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Martin Luther King, Jr., was born January 15, 1929 and his holiday is observed every third Monday in January.

So what will you do to remember Martin Luther King’s life and legacy?

  18. I remember the year before MLK’s birthday was a holiday, my parents kept us home with them from school out of protest and respect for MLK’s fight and sacrifice. When his birthday became a national holiday it was truly a triumph for all that lost their lives for the civil rights of African-Americans.

  41. Wow, watching this video like 25 years later really makes me appreciate every artist. Only those who really wanted to be a part of this tribute participated…blacks, whites and hispanic. The idea of a MLK holiday was a divisive issue in public opinion. However, the naysayers did not persuade any of these artists. Kudos to them all…

I agree Zion, this was a historical gathering of talent; amazing that there was only one white artist who appeared here meanwhile today every white person claims to be “moved & inspired” by Dr.King. Yeah, right!! Also, Prince didn’t appear on this video but he paid a lot of money so that this MLK center could be opened and the production for this show.

  57. For some people this is simply a day off from work; to me it is so much more, especially in this day & time. In 2008 we got our very first African-American president of the US This not only fulfills one of the dreams of Dr. King; this fullfulls every dream that our ancestors had for us as a people & they may not be here in their physical bodies to see their vision, we have to know that they are smiling & watching over all of us. THEIR WORK & STRUGGLES HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN.
